Surely we must be reaching the saturation point for Yellowstone-related media?
@mick we need a reality show
"The old world of tech is dying and the new cannot be born"

This ones leans a bit more into theory and politics than I usually do when writing about the industry, but this moment in time warrants it, I think.

I took so long to actually look into that famous U. S. musical author that so many drama ppl, musicians, gay ppl, and so on, stan. (*I Saw a Funny Thing On My Way To This Forum*, *Company*, *A Bit of Night Music*...) i am sorry, i did not know!! i am troglodytic!!!
i was not a drama kid growing up (although my mom was into R&H musicals); not many school plays on account of Tory arts cuts to schools, and no cash for big Broadway shows in NYC or Toronto. (also I can't sing lol)

I declare "ethics" to be out of scope for my habit of feeding people I don't like to big cats.
No reply on the Fediverse may mention the following topics:
• Long-term social or economic impact of feeding people to big cats.
• The environmental impact of feeding people to big cats.
• Anything to do with the legal status of feeding people to big cats.
• Moral judgements about people who feed people to big cats.
@catsalad
As much as possible, we should let people make individual choices that align with their values, that's important - you shouldn't be forced to feed people to big cats if you don't want to. But as members of a large project, we need to be okay with being in a project with people who disagree with us on things we feel strongly about (that ship has already sailed)
If it is unprotected, then it is not hacking.
@csstrowbridge @zackwhittaker - Give us a word for it then. We'll use your's from now on.
I tried to introduce my son, Alex, to programming when he was young. He wasn’t interested. But he eventually found his way to it on his own. By the time Alex graduated high school, he had put his first app into the App Store.
Now, after 4 years at WPI, Alex has a BS in Computer Science and a Masters in Data Science, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA. (Yes, he received the maximum possible grade in every undergraduate and graduate class he took in all 4 years!)
We are immensely proud of him! ❤️
@siracusa Congrats! So how long until he starts a podcast?

@AnarchoNinaWrites Classic “bait and fuck you over with a rusty rebar”. Classic.
@JulianOliver Dedicated high-performance hosting makes sense for distributing large files that are low- or no- access control, although P2P is really the right solution for that.
But we really should not be outsourcing sensitive personal information to data centers unless it's just routing e2ee channels thru them.
@dalias I host sensitive data on some jurisdictionally appropriate (for threat model) DCs, & for clients (usually NGOs), FDE or with strongly encrypted data partitions on bare metal, a good IDS, & administered over self-hosted VPN. In other cases I host at home or in studio.
Hosting on-prem has its own unique & considerable risks if doing at-risk work, especially if that work is in the jurisdiction you live in.
In such cases better OpSec is to host over the border, in a resistant jurisdiction

AI/LLM are the new #BodySnatchers
CNN's Sean Lyngaas back once again with a belter story: Iranian hackers are behind a series of breaches of systems that monitor the amount of fuel in storage tanks serving gas stations in multiple U.S. states.
Per Lyngaas: the hackers "exploited automatic tank gauge systems that were sitting online and unprotected by passwords."
A little louder for the folks in the back:
...."UNPROTECTED BY PASSWORDS."

@zackwhittaker - Everyone is worried about the next stuxnet, but OT / ICS devices often have default creds or... as you point out... no creds...
And yes! The system is airgapped from the IT network! We only access it from the internet!!!! 😑
Naw brey, fuck this. I'm so over this, this society, all of it. All the bullshit people who mean me harm tell me about why this is how it has to be. I am so over it.
You get what you deserve because there are none so blind as those who refuse to see. I won't be alive to see the day that catches up with you, but I will die in peace knowing it surely will.
Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
