Brailab PC v3.2 is here, and it makes a big change. It sounds like a real unit now! With a speaker.
The emulated BraiLab has always been a little dull — boxy, distant, a bit like a
voice coming through a telephone. That turned out to be a real, measurable fault,
and it is fixed!
A third of the sound we produced was below 250 Hz.
A recording of genuine PCF-8200 hardware has 1.5% of its energy down there.
We had 23%. None of it was audible as bass — a small speaker cannot reproduce
it — but it filled up the available loudness, so everything from 500 Hz upward
came out 5 to 17 dB quieter than it should. That is what made the voice sound
muffled: not a missing top end, but a bottom end that should never have existed.
No real BraiLab produced it either. The chip drives an amplifier through a
coupling capacitor and then a small speaker, and neither passes anything near
there. We had simply never modelled that part of the machine. Now we do, and it's beautiful.

Relatedly, when you shame someone for doing something, you give them two options, more or less:
- Admit that you're right, and feel intense shame.
- Deny that you're right, and feel the relief and satisfaction that comes from avoiding shame.
Guess which one most people do.
@shauna Of course if one intends to shame you, he is trying to undermine you in other people's sights
We strongly recommend against buying Pixel 11 devices. Pixel 8, 9 and 10 have much better overall security for GrapheneOS. Pixel 10 is cheaper with similar hardware and MTE. Pixel 11's Titan M3 should improve BFU security for users without a strong passphrase, but losing MTE craters AFU security.
It sure is strange just how many actually legitimately criminal terrorist orgs have their shit behind Cloudflare, or host actual pedophile rings on Telegram, but it's Autistici/Inventati that gets taken down.

@missmythreyi Best haiku ever (though I prefer it in a different rendering). It goes so hard.

I absentmindedly made a pkgsrc package for iocaine. Very bare-bones at the moment, no init script or anything yet, but adding that doesn't look particularly hard.
Once I'm comfortable with the pkgsrc package, I will submit it upstream.
I have not done that with the NixOS package / module, because nixpkgs is on GitHub, and it doesn't have an anti-LLM policy. Either one of those would be enough for me to not touch it with a ten feet pole, both? Not even with a hundred feet pole.
I haven't submitted the Debian package, because it's so very far from being policy compliant it's not funny (it's a binary-only package, built from a binary statically linked on NixOS).
Now, pkgsrc isn't on GitHub, and has an anti-LLM policy via NetBSD. Thus, I feel comfortable submitting a package.
@sidereal it's hilarious how windows is getting so awful that the cost of switching to linux for many people is getting lower and lower, and a lot of that (although not all of it) has to do with AI
and then linux bros are like "we should adopt it too"
you had one job, which was to be an alternative
I know this is a bit tmi, but I have a complicated relationship with clothes, and pants in particular. I found a pair of pants I get on with and literally don't buy any other kind. They are reasonably priced and comfortable. Everything fits in and doesn't move around too much (sorry for being sexy on the internet, but we've all got a bum - deal with it). However they do have a tendency to fall apart after a while. I will charitably say this is because I clean them fastidiously and not that my balls excrete acid somehow, like someone in my marriage who will remain anonymous has theorised. I therefore have to occasionally sadly say goodbye to my old friends, with whom I have shared many adventures. But I went through some Very Hard Times not that long ago and took to mending my pants (which for the interested, are exclusively black - that's just how I roll). And then I discovered I got a kick out of mending them with gold thread. And now I can't stop. And I imagine it's not terribly appealing to Mrs Bread to have a husband who refuses to throw away his old pants, but instead spends hours badly sewing them with the wrong colour thread. But the thing is.....a) she's not interested in me at the moment anyway, and b) my brain has decided it's like kintsugi. Whatever the pants version of kintsugi is. Pantsugi. And it means I rescue my old friends and we go on even more adventures, and they get a chance to live the second half of their life a little snazzier. Just me and my pants with their lil gold sparkle. Going running around town and getting into mischief. Anyway I've just done a bunch of sewing and it's made me strangely happy. And it's not like I never buy new pants. I did recently. And I got them from somewhere else. A trusted premium brand. And do you know how much they were? THIRTY POUNDS!!!!!!!!!! FOR PANTS!!!!!!!!!!! It should be a crime. The worst crime. Charging £30 for pants. And when they inevitably die, I will need to decide whether they deserve to be inducted into the Gold Club. Honestly I think they may not deserve it. I think they might be one and done. The audacity. Sometimes I read what I've written and genuinely wonder if I'm ok.
I hope your Toot starts a trend of mending underwear with gold thread, or Pantsugi as you've coined it.
Pantsugi is thrifty and environmentally friendly, so what's not to like.

A call for Dolly tributes for a collective Fedi post
All flags are flying at half-mast here at 1001 OA, in honour of our beloved Dolly Parton.
We have Dolly’s 1974 album Jolene on The List and hadn’t yet gotten to it on the blog, but now… Dolly was such a force that I feel it’s inadequate to spotlight the album/her with just my own words. And I know there’s a lot of love for Dolly in the Fediverse, so I’d love to do a Fedi-sourced blog post to celebrate Dolly and Jolene, similar to what we did for Bowie’s Blackstar (though, I imagine, a lot less sombre). I adore these sorts of community oral history things from us regular music fans, it’s really a beautiful thing to see how the artists we love and the music they make bring us all together. So, if there’s enough interest, I’d love to provide that space for people on the 1001 OA blog.
If you’re on Fedi and you’d like to share your thoughts on Dolly and Jolene (or any other Dolly album, really), please join in! Submissions could include whatever you’d like to express your love of Dolly, e.g., a story of when you first heard Dolly or Jolene/the title track, a favourite performance of Dolly’s or a sweet cover, a favourite Dolly quote or anecdote, Dolly fan art you made, or simply your personal tribute to Dolly…whatever, even if it’s just something you already posted in the Fediverse (no AI-generated or AI-assisted material, thanks). For reference, for our collective Bowie spotlight, we had submissions ranging from a 1-word reaction to a 1-page personal anecdote, and they were all fantastic.[1]
I’ll leave this call up for about a month. Submissions can be sent via reply/DM to the pinned toot on our linernotes.club account, or to the blog email, johnmastodon @ 1001otheralbums.com. Please let me know if you want your full Fedi name and instance included so it’s clickable (otherwise I default to just the username), or would like it anonymous. I’ll then collect and arrange everything together and add some general notes/links for the album as we do for typical album spotlights, and will then publish the blog post here, cross-posting to the Fediverse just as this post is. The aim is to publish on the date the single “Jolene” was released, October 15.

@Majden888 @barocci @oblomov @simontol @steko @luca @labrezza per essere davvero etici bisogna saper fare scelte controcorrente e difficili
Da una banca mi aspetto prudenza e accortezza, gestiscono soldi di imprese e famiglie, non ci si può aspettare troppo sono altri che si devono mettere in campo, ma quell'etica non può sparire alla prima raffica di vento
Evidentemente siamo ancora agli albori. Sempre che con queste premesse nasca davvero qualcosa
@urlyman Similar problem with living off of second-hand goods and thrift-store stuff. It’s clearly a good thing to do, but it’s only viable because there’s an endless stream of excess to scavenge.
