This is a good, if long article. This section is worth noting: Advance Australia, "boasted that it ran contradictory messages for different audiences during the Voice referendum campaign.

It said its main campaign, Fair Australia, told people that the Voice was divisive and went too far, and should be voted down; while its Not Enough campaign was specifically targeted at progressive voters in urban areas and said that the Voice didn't go far enough, so it should be voted down."

A discreet intellectual network has been reshaping the world for 70 years. Here's how

A constant battle of ideas reshapes the world we live in, and few groups have been more successful in winning the war than the little-known Atlas Network.

AI isn't "the most transformative technology of our times". There is a lot of structural transformation going on, and there are lots of claims about specific computational technologies. Conflating these facts obscures the true technopolitics of the interregnum.

Hello #UX folk!

Some people seem to think that the "craft of ux" is dead: striving to be polished is naive. E.g. snapchat & Instagram stories, which are horrible UX, are claimed to be "good enough".

I'm writing a blog post exploring this but need links to any examples of this type of good enough thinking?

I'm expecting mostly techbro types will say this

EDIT: I shouldn't have called out Instagram so strongly. It's odd but not horrible.

@scottjenson I think it's true. We employ *zero* UX designers or graphic designers to work on our product. R&D software engineers are expected to just bodge something together that's “good enough”.

I think that whoever put “sleeping,” “socializing” and “spending time with family” on the list of hobbies in the python developers survey needs to take a vacation for the safety of themselves and everyone around them

Solar-covered parking could match entire U.S. power output (~4,400 TWh/yr). Australia’s even better placed: brutal sun, vast car parks, grid-edge stress, #EV demand. Globally this is pre-cleared land + instant generation. Not tech-limited—planning-limited. Shade → power. ⚡🌞🅿️ #Bettrification #Solar

I'm not sorry for advocating against VC-funded alternatives like Skylight and Upscrolled

We don't need more dangerous exits (see Elon Musk and Twitter), we need more open platforms, that can't be bought.

Period.

@dansup if you go to some quartile platform that operates on the same logic then you're going to end up in the same boat a few years later. Fundamentally we architecting is the only durable long-term solution. If people were to move to a high quality Federated solution then it would basically be irreversible and Unstoppable

I was all psyched up to get an ultrasound transducer up my bum to check out my prostate but apparently they don’t do that anymore according to the sonographer. I prepared everything immaculately for nothing!

@slightlyoff I've been struggling with a parallel problem since I started working on browser extensions. I truly do not like that the only way for users to get extensions is to go through the browser's blessed "store." At the same time, I feel the need to try to protect users from the very real dangers of making extensions installable from arbitrary sites. I believe a better solution is possible, but I haven't yet heard or thought of a way to deliver on it

@dotproto Allow multiple stores! Build reputation systems for the stores, not just the extensions.

Today in debugging: I just tracked down a Wine/Proton bug that randomly breaks any Unity app/game that uses (managed) threads.

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59333

RE: https://vt.social/@lina/115976596526464609

Brought to you by "reverse engineering" the Unity Mono dll to match it up with the public bdwgc source code, and then patching the symbols back in with objcopy --add-symbol, to get proper stack traces and watchpoints to work in MinGW gdb.exe ^^;;

Also had to patch the dll to enable GC debug logs and warnings (which are hardcoded off in the build...)

Ghidra session with mon-2.0-bdwgc.dll open. A number of GC-related symbols have been manually added.
