A huge proportion of UK agricultural land is used for keeping beef cows and growing food for them + we import a lot of feed for them.
> a study that showed that this 85% of agricultural land which is used to produce meat and dairy provides only 32% of total calories and 48% of total protein.
https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5804/cmselect/cmenvaud/312/report.html
Theres also a lot of other land that could be used for food production (e.g. for big examples see my last post + most land thats household gardens doesnt grow food)
Finally small farms produce more food per land area. Unfortunately farm sizes continue to grow (lots of farms are sold to larger farns) at the cost of the amount of food produced.

@pallenberg Guten Rückflug!

In the UK more land is used for golf courses than allotments. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening)
Extra bad because theres huge waiting lists for allotments in most cities and local authorities are supposed to provide enough to cover demand, but city councils pretty much never do this.
Golf course water use is huge. They can carry on putting huge amounts of water on their courses when households are banned from using hosepipes to water their plants due to low levels in reservoirs.
Last night I finished listening to this on shipping.
It is packed with mind-blowing statistics about the sheer scale of what we’ve engineered.
But also depressingly clarifying. The unintended message of its speaker, Sal Mercogliano, is that we are going the wrong way as fast as we possibly can, with little to no intent of placing a finger on the electronic ship’s wheel
…Flying is in my view another one of these *going the wrong way as fast as we can* things. It’s much more visible because it’s a consumerist action.
But what really oils the wheels of our insanity is shipping. Just *astonishingly* unsustainable.
We’ll keep doing it until we create the conditions for the collapse of its supply chains https://mastodon.social/@urlyman/116928645665357082
@elettrona @macfranc @writefreely it looks like the nudging worked and WriteFreely 0.17, with the patch for the unlimited signups and many other fixes, has been released a few hours ago (thank you @matt !)
To fix the security issue with open registration, it should now suffice to upgrade to the latest version, no need for a custom build from Git.
hey #artists:
My friend who does spiritual counseling is making her first time web site and needs a logo that spells her four-letter name in a series of hand drawn letters comprised of stages of a flower opening. Any Fedi folks know of someone I can hire? Thanks in advance and please RT for reach?

@hipsterelectron as a french person, je ne sais quoi is more or less the same amount as an angel hair
@gkrnours this was intended as an insult to the french language and i apologize for abusing it in this manner
@elettrona @macfranc @writefreely
Buongiorno.
Oh gosh this article makes me want to cry. Why does everyone keep printing what that awful CEO says without fact-checking it? https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02218-9
I saw a quote in a different article where someone from Reflect Orbital said it was totally fine to look at the satellite with a telescope. Meanwhile, in their own FCC reply comment, they said that you could possibly have eye damage by looking at the satellite with telescopes 12 inches or larger.
@sundogplanets
10x10m = 100m², so let's generously say 100kW light = 25kW photovoltaic power
for a few minutes (overflight in low orbit), guesstimate 4 minutes = 1/8 h
= 1.5 kWh per satellite and orbit for one location ~13 orbits a day.
At current energy market prices that is way below 60ct per satellite, location and day, before infrastructure and launch.
And all that only for the concentrated beam. That drops below 10ct/day for the advertised deployment, or 0.001ct/day for illumination.
@tecnologia

@silvanomarioni @tecnologia co 'sta "ideologia gender" finta, ce l'ha proprio fissa. Una roba indecente
Don't sleep on "Aaron Burr, Sir."
It provides insane amounts of connective tissue for the entire story.
A masterful second song.
