The NEC Breakfast Computer PROFESSOR TOAST HYPER 7 was a unique morning-oriented computer designed to sit on a user's nightstand and provide a quick portal into email, local news, and hot fresh toast all in the one unit.
Hm. I have an old laptop somewhere around here, running some ancient Debian unstable. I should see if I could repurpose that. It could serve as an experimental NetBSD workstation.
Could be a gateway to a new item on the bucket list: a @NetBSD.org email address. One of my first items on my tech bucket list was a @debian.org address. I had one for almost two decades. Another item was a @gnu.org email address, but I abandoned that. I need1 a new, fancy email address I can be proud of, and... why not NetBSD?
But I need to run it for a while to figure out what, and how, and why, and if I could contribute to justify it.
That's not really a real need, but vanity talking. That's something I'm having trouble growing out of, it keeps resurfacing in various forms. The bastard. ↩︎
Hmm! There's a wayland directory in pkgsrc. Mmm. NetBSD + Niri on the old laptop? That would be nice.
It's a pretty darn old laptop, mind you. Not even sure it's 64bit, so maybe I'll stick to something X11. Though, XFCE used to run fine on it, so it's not... like terrible.
Not like the literal 486 laptop I have, which I should also repurpose. Now doing that would be a real challenge. It doesn't have ethernet, the closest thing it has to networking is a parallel and a serial port. Things no other computer I have has.
