As a practical matter, it's unlikely that the vote-by-mail restrictions will have significant practical effect on the 2026 midterms, even the Court ultimately allows them (which it is not at all clear they will). It's just too close to the election at this point.
@mattblaze They've succeeded in generating a little extra chaos and uncertainty, which is the real point. The fact that SCOTUS failed to put the kibosh on this immediately is a Trump victory by itself.
Same with: they don't need to actually deploy ICE to polling places, they just need people to think it might happen, in order to change voting behavior.
You don't need me to tell you this but it needs to be said: Elections are won or lost in the margins.

A Translate Science book club?
We're considering creating a Translate Science book club. The idea would be to choose a popular science book and invite one or more *translators* of the book to join us online for a book club style discussion, including their insights from translating scientific content in the book.
We're thinking books like Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, or something by Ed Yong or Mary Roach.
First, what do you, our Translate Science community, think of this idea?
Second, if it appeals to you, what books would you suggest?
Third, maybe some of you translate popular science books! Or maybe you know people who do. If you do, we'd love to hear from you and will keep you in mind if the book club materializes.

I'm not sure I want to see Canada respond to the U.S. by burning down its tech industry, as a successful enactment of the Doctorow proposal could do. But given that Americans keep on electing governments and funding corporations that exploit and renege - for Trump is by no means alone in this regard - I'm not sure I don't.
Now adding "purchasing dairy products" to the list of thing the Scolds of Mastodon are upset with me about.

@timbray I tend to think that, if these companies made a public watermark checker, then the effect would be mostly positive. I see some possible difficulties:
* If you want to check if a piece is human-written, you may have to submit it to every watermark checker available.
* What's the rate of false positives? Even a small number like 1e-9 means that someone may be falsely accused of using an LLM.
* I think all this becomes moot with the wide availability of local models.
@buo I think the algorithm would make it pretty easy to return a percent probability rather than a yes/no, which might help.
i mean yeah i shouldn't be terribly surprised that bell labs both claims to be the first to analyze task scheduling while then describing what sounds like a scene from "yes, minister". but nobody ever cares about dataflow. like at all
