Have pity on @withaveeay today. He had just drifted off into a deep sleep last night while I was reading "just one more page" of my murder mystery, when he was rudely awoken by my dancing around the bedroom trying to catch a spider the size of a side plate running across the bed.

Okay maybe not a side plate, but definitely a soup ladle.

He joined in the "there! get it!" game before the spider had finished having its fun and ran off to who knows where, leaving us wide awake, adrenalin pumping.

E giusto per non farmi fraintendere: Konrad Lorenz, uno degli etologi storici, forse uno dei primi a spiegare il comportamento animale, in modo impeccabile, comprensibile anche ai ragazzini: lui era uno di quelli che auspicavano l'eliminazione dei disabili perché rovinavano, indebolivano, le generazioni successive (sto semplificando). Questo rende i libri di Lorenz da cancellare? NO. Si capisce solo quanto a livello etologico fosse ottimo, ma non sapesse relazionarsi con gli umani. Punto.
Non sono per la "censura" intesa come silenziamento sistematico. Vorrei però che ognuno avesse il proprio posto. Perché se iniziamo a dire che regolamentare i contenuti rischia di contrastare il principio del fediverso, allora anche vietare di girare nudi in chiesa contraddice la storia (Gesù non mi risultava vestito, in croce). I am very opposed to other social media platforms. I try not to bang the drum too much - it's boring and negative and I believe in advocating the positives of Fedi rather than going on about everyone on twitter being a piece of shit or whatever. We all know they are. However there are many people on other platforms that I personally don't agree with, but who aren't caught up in their brains in the constant culture wars. Some people just want to go on Bluesky or TikTok or whatever and don't really care about who owns it or why. They just want cats and the funnies. I'm not here to shame those people. However I do get a bit cross about Instagram and Meta generally. In the piece of shit stakes, those companies and the people involved are intrinsically not good. Which is why it is so very frustrating that they are so good at monetising content that people want to engage with. For example a couple I've just found out about who spent all of their time and money converting an old school bus into a travelling paradise and now just bum around the world, funding their beautiful lifestyle through clicks and likes. Why. Why must it be that way. I want to follow their journey. Their hydroponic garden and pet jumping spider. I want them to live their glorious lives. But it cannot be separated from the machine that ruins lives and indeed our beautiful planet. It is very unfair. Do you know what the real issue is? Same as ever it's fuckn capitalism. In my utopia we shall all have a converted school bus with a wood-burning stove and a bath and a gaming station and 10-feet of kitchen counter top and a sexy wife and two dogs and an electronic awning.

Months ago (or a year ago, by now), I bought a few Intel N150 mini PCs for dirt cheap, between 120 and 150 Euro each (depending on the RAM).
Two of them sat untouched on my desk for months, almost making me regret buying them.
Today, I'm glad I did: considering how high hardware prices are getting, having a little backup supply doesn't hurt.
And one of them is about to host SmartOS.

🇬🇧 UnifiedPush server deployed!

This is a bit technical, but here’s what it means for you: You may not know this, but when an app (even a third-party or open-source one) sends you push notifications on Android, it goes through Google’s servers (FCM infrastructure).

If you’re on Android and use Conversations (XMPP), you can now bypass this, and also for apps that support it (examples: Fedilab, Tusky, Moshidon, Elements...).

Now, go to Conversations settings and scroll all the way to the bottom to “UnifiedPush Provider”; enter `push.gayfr.live` in the “Push Server” field, and check your XMPP account in the field above it. That's it, Conversations now bypasses Google FCM.

Optionally, you can do the same for apps that support it. Prerequisite: you must install the app from F-Droid (not from the Google Play Store, which, unsurprisingly, blocks this feature).

To do this on such an app, go to the account or notification settings in your app and enable the "UnifiedPush" or "Push Notification Provider" setting. The rest should happen automatically.

That's it! The next time you receive a notification, it will go through our servers instead of Google's.

Note: Of course, if you’re on iOS, you’re screwed, as this option isn’t available.
