@piepants When do they usually start in Hokkaido?
@David I can't remember when they started last year, but I assume a few weeks after most other places in Japan, due to the relative later start to summer. I'll try and make a note of it.
Russian social media is flooded with farmers warning that the Russian agricultural sector is about to collapse because there is no fuel.
No fuel means no harvest, no harvest means neither food for humans nor for animals. No food for the animals means no milk, no eggs, no meat, etc.
It will be a long cold winter in Putin's Russia.
@randahl remember how Russia starved Ukraine in the 1930s? Now they do it to themselves 🤡

The only reason governments would want to ban #OpenSource and #OpenWeight #AI is to ensure OpenAI and Anthropic retain a duopoly.

I don't think I agree that advertisement impairs our agency at all.
I've literally never bought anything because of an ad, everyone always retorts "that's what you think," and they're always wrong.
People who buy things because an ad on the TV had an attractive person talking about it never had agency to begin with.

@DavidM_yeg This is true, but that they’d even want a good-faith “representative” troubles me. So far as I’m concerned, the theory on which the practice of decision is something that can be safely delegated to professionals misses most of what is valuable about the practice of decision.
2 questions:
Why must a representative be “professional”?
What do you mean by “the practice of decision”? Your statement makes it sound like a personal attribute or discipline, when political decision must by its nature be collective and in community or it becomes the act of a ruler.

* Fake-News
* Betrug
* Förderung von Suchtverhalten
* toxische Männlichkeit (Looksmaxxing)
* und neu offenbar auch Kinderpornografie
Die einzig richtige Lösung wäre ein Betriebsverbot von Meta in der EU.

Interestingly, Meta has been implementing a "tune your algorithm" type of feature, which is surprisingly user-focused. You can select the topics you want to see more of and what you want to see less of, mute words, add your preferences... of course, Meta has their own agenda and wants you to get as hooked as possible so they can make money off you as a product, but I like the idea that it is not completely opaque.
I am building something similar in my Mastodon instance but truly without any monetary goal.
For algorithm haters out there, remember that reverse chronological order is an algorithm too. If you like getting video recommendations on YouTube, PeerTube, or music recommendations in a playlist, that is an algorithm too. I honestly do not understand all the algorithm hate when it is focused on the tech itself rather than commercialism.
The capitalist nature of algorithms is, of course, something to stand against, since it works by exploiting users. But if it is for user benefit without any rotten backstory, algorithms in my world are great.

@rolle I generally don't appreciate biased/skewed algoritms, where the algoritm is designed to promote a certain viewpoint that may not be in my interest - and I believe this is what most people mean when they say "I hate algoritms". In commercial media, practically all recommendation algoritms are biased - they are designed to serve you a certain worldview, promote some product, to control your mindspace - while algoritms where I decide the weighing are generally speaking fine.
I would even say that algorims are even necessary in a social media of any size, because without it, you get drowned in noise. One might think that yeah, I don't need algoritms to find what I need - and that's fine when you are looking for some certain thing. But if idly browsing, you'll soon get drowned in noise, where you can't find even the nuggets you might actually be interested in. It that the ideal algoritms would serve me, not the interests of whoever is running the service.

Ich wollte eigentlich meinen Blickwinkel auf Meta dazu schreiben, aber es macht mich einfach (mal wieder) sprachlos, womit und wie skrupellos Meta den Umsatz generiert. Und dann immer dieses Schulterzucken.
