As Cory Doctorow notes, "Big Tech has proved that its only principles are not paying taxes, invading your privacy, and not being broken up by antitrust enforcers." So they've effectively joined the Trump regime, and any nation that dares challenge them risks a a great deal. https://pluralistic.net/2026/09/03/broken-arrows/
I am shopping around for attorneys to sue a couple businesses over their use of AI and automated voice customer service.
Due to my Parkinson's Plus, MSA, I have speech issues and over this past month, at multiple businesses, I haven't been able to get past their AI customer service loop to speak to a human because the AI can't understand me.
I even made an #ADA request for a human worker to the AI prompt.
I am going to sue to try to force their AI to understand an ADA prompt, or offer one, to bypass the AI/voice only customer support and directly connect to a human. #AI
One issue is, I talk slow and deliberate because I have to get the words out and some phrases are slower than others and AI customer support is too impatient to wait and moves on mid-sentence, not understanding my request

For all my spreadsheet error enthusiasts like @Felienne - this one is a doozy. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-gas-royalty-budget-error-9.7328419
'"A formula was incorrectly dragged across cells," said a ministry representative.’
The fact this is still a thing in 2026 is entirely on Microsoft.
I blame Lotus. Improv fixed all of these problems, but they put their marketing budget behind their VisiCalc clone and it became the killer app for the IBM PC. Microsoft copied 1-2-3 not Improv because their customers were using 1-2-3.

What tool, device, or software that you used a lot, but then disappeared from your life (or from the world), do you miss the most?
@Em0nM4stodon Google Reader
Why would a web server's logs show a connection from the default gateway's IPv4 address when the client browser is on a macOS machine which is on the same network as the web server?
@ausfestivus that is quite weird, but in theory it could happen if there’s no route to the local subnet for some reason.
Goodbye Nigel Farage.
British journalist Louis Wilson now has him on camera funneling illegal foreign capital into British politics.
This is a crime.
@biggrizzly
😱 quelle horreur.
WE DID IT. WE WON. 💜✊
Wikimedia Foundation workers voted 158 YES to 14 NO: 91.9% of ballots cast, with 81% turnout.
We’re so proud of everyone who built this union, and this win belongs to our whole community. We could not have done it without the solidarity of Wikimedia volunteers.
This is just the beginning. We stand with our UK siblings in their recognition process now, and with future organizing efforts across WMF’s global workforce. 🌍

who up despairing about their employability in an industry they find abhorrently revolting
despite an early all-consuming passion for the machines and their fascinating puzzle-like abstractions
and contained within them the potential for good and connection and community-building
and a compulsion to increase your symbiosis with them
there are so many of us
we are not the industry
i bet we rival whole cities in population
there has got to be a way to concentrate our collective will

I just completed the Anthropic settlement form. It's bad for overseas claimants. SSN/TIN won't accept a foreign TIN so I sent them a W8-BEN-E form by email.
Also, you can't reclassify a claimant. We have an author listed as a publisher. 🤦
@p
Okay!
sweet.

Meet the 2026 #IgNobelPrize winners
Established in 1991, #IgNobel are a good-natured parody of the #NobelPrize; they honor “achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think.” The unapologetically campy awards ceremony features miniature operas, scientific demos, and “24/7 lectures,” whereby experts must explain their work twice: once in 24 seconds and the second in just seven words
They range from candy snatching, to snake bites, to a splash-free urinal!

Jemand rollte eben eine *sehr* seltsame Maschine durch die Straße, deren Funktion ich nicht erraten konnte. Sowas lässt mir keine Ruhe. Zum Glück war sie mit «birdly somniacs» angeschrieben.

Shared infrastructure is how the #Fediverse can grow without recreating enshittified platform silos.
We’re excited to share that Bonfire is working with Mastodon on two critical areas of Fediverse infrastructure: remote media storage and automated content detection.
Built around open Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider (FASP) specifications, this work will help platforms connect to shared services instead of each having to build and operate the same capabilities alone.
Our aim is to make these capabilities open, interoperable, and available for any federated server to adopt.
A big thank you to @Mastodon@mastodon.social team for involving us in this work. We’re looking forward to building together and sharing what we learn along the way.
