I hope this email finds you alone, inventing and polishing your words.
There's a common misconception that climate change will simply move farmland north of its current location. A lot of Americans were banking on Canada. And look, Canada is on fire.
Boreal forest doesn't become arable farmland easily. The more likely outcome is a lot of places become deserts and there is no arable land at all.
I've just finished "The Day of the Jackal". For some reason, I had not read it before.
I very much enjoyed it.
So much so, that I am going straight for "The Odessa File".
I wonder if there are any good, modern day (or even sci-fi) detective / thriller type novels.
@neil The “Slough House” series is an obvious suggestion, but I’d suggest going either/or on the novels vs TV series
when a technofascist oligarch says their new toy is inevitable, you must remember that what they mean is that your rejection of that toy would decrease their potential earnings.
when anyone else says a new technofascist toy is inevitable, you must remember that what they mean is that they are comfortable with "cattle" being their station in life.
neither of these assertions are an actual truth about reality. neither forms sufficient justification for adopting something.

*sigh* .... every damn time ....
In addition to the dangerous heat in DC over (heat index predicted over 105) the next two days, smoke from Canadian wildfires is drifting into the region. It will be brutal, especially for vulnerable populations and those with respiratory problems.
Drink plenty of water, stay in AC or at the very least shade, and have an n95 mask handy if you must venture out.
@mattblaze Time to break out the Corsi-Rosenthal box I made in 2023
Almost forgot football is still happening. But England vs Argentina? Yeah, gonna go do something else
@farah It would be much cooler if they agreed that this settles the Damage Falklands question once and for all.
well said @daedalus #TheCrux

"Enjoying the people you work with, and the thing you're doing together, outweighs almost everything else.
It doesn't need to be a world-changing mission... It's fine and good to make shoes for people, or do their taxes, or to tend gardens or build houses or any of the zillions of mundane, ordinary things that need to get done for modern society to exist."
This was supposed to change everything.
The thing about living in a UK city during a World Cup: every 15 mins it sounds like the apocalypse is actively happening
@farah okay but are you ticklish?
@trickykat Maybe?
I am looking for a moderator for the relay. I can manage it on my own for now, but some help would be welcome. If you are someone I am used to talking to, I can grant you access.
The web version already lets you manage reports. The next app release will offer full management of reports, along with a badge to show your role.

It’s coming home (an Exocet missle into the hull of a British destroyer)
🚀
I have been added to my cat's WhatsApp group. The whole street has a group so they all know where he is and who has given him treats already. He has a better social life than me as proven by the fact that this is the first group chat I've ever been in.

How'd I incorporate this into my hypothetical string-centric computer? Given it'd be vital for the intended use of internet-communication!
Our CPU's microkernel-mainloop in its firmware would invoke it for all external-interrupts feeding in the time. So I'd include Blake2s in that firmware.
It'd run in its "Arithmetic Core" coprocessor, a bare bones 16bit processor I designed. In a special mode for managing globals whilst the computers on (or even, for the clock, when its off).
2/3?
I count (out of curiosity) that Blake2s would require half a KiB of add, compare, bitshift, bitwise, memory, & branching operations. Mostly due to implementing a 32bit hash function on a 16bit machine. On the flipside the code would compress into ROM well!
This would be with including an auto-increment mode on the read-pointer. And I haven't proposed yet adding a couple modes for "alternate" registers & memory-access.
3/3!
