Misofonia portami via
Tried to make a little Mastodon plaything that scrapes a curated set of local timelines to see whats hot on Mastodon.
I know the Trending Hashtags page exists on Mastodon but it never feels accurate to me.
Anyway, the thing I made isn't accurate either because there are so many bots posting using the same tags and its so much work to exclude them all.
Also, so many people don't add hashtags to their toots. And a full-text scrape is intense.
🤷
@matt Your server admins/moderators can curate the list of trending hashtags, so it's not a purely algorithmic list.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
It's #MEAwarenessDay or #WorldMEDay, and I want to say that for all its many serious faults, I am grateful to the fedi for introducing me to many people with ME (known or suspected, diagnosed or having the diagnosis denied them).
They are some of the best people I know, and they're living with one of the worst conditions I know of. They knew millions would be joining them as soon as the pandemic started, and they're always the vanguard of how to be safe and how to spot systemic ableism anywhere
Hey! Rest of the 'UK' and 'the world'! Scotland pretty much told Reform to f**k right off. Our state sponsored propaganda press are definitely ignoring this fact.
Scotland hates fascists.

@khinsen @zimoun Oh but the question is whether manifest files should be isolated as well—I should read more carefully. :-)
I’d lean towards “no”, because like you wrote, manifests can be and often are more advanced than just lists of package names.
Conversely, channel files are almost always trivial, with ‘channel-with-substitutes-available’ being perhaps the only attempt to program channel files (but it is little used AFAIK).

Remember that a whole lot of Memphis soul exists because of Booker T & the MGs.
A legendary band made up of two Black guys named Booker T. Jones and Al Jackson, along with two white guys named Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn.
Stax is proof that a desegregated space in the South can thrive and leave a lasting legacy.
Eyes on Memphis.
@jrconlin The exception to this, of course, is code you spend a lot of time on to abstract it such that it is reusable.
I just got an email from a journalist who works for the quarterly journal of the main Dutch scientific grant organisation. They want to interview me for the upcoming issue of their journal.
The theme of that issue is: Failure.
Especially, the email helpfully clarifies, *personal* failure.
@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place Many years ago there was a TV show on the BBC called Mastermind in which the contestants could pick a specialist subject to be asked question about.
"Your special subject is personal failure" is not a choice I recall, I must admit, but I feel I wouldn't score too badly!

Today I spoke with someone I've known for a very long time. We have a relationship of mutual trust, and when I can, I answer his questions about technology. Today he managed to put me in a difficult position.
He is going through a hard time and would like to do something, but doing it would require him to join a club. This club, although legitimate, legal, and in my eyes perfectly acceptable, could cause him some trouble at work if that information ever came out. Not so much in today's world, but in the world tomorrow may turn into.
Five years ago I would have told him to go ahead, without hesitation. Today, I truly could not reassure him. On the one hand, there is nothing bad or wrong about it. On the other, I no longer trust those who manage our personal data.
A provider has already notified me three times in the past year that my data was involved in a breach. Because of a particular relationship I have with them, I asked for clarification, and they explained that development, which is not managed by them, has become lower quality and that changing company is difficult. At the same time, they are worried about the repercussions.
Now: the fact that I am a customer of that company is not a problem. Even less so my email address, or the hash of my unique password. But if this acquaintance of mine were to be affected by a data breach in that context, he would be taking a serious risk. Much greater than he suspects.
So tonight I'm in limbo. He thanked me and decided not to sign up. I feel guilty, perhaps, for having been overly cautious.
@stefano you did what you thought was right. You put yourself in his shoes, with the knowledge that you acquired through your professional experience, and you admitted that you wouldn't sign up for that club.
There's nothing to ashamed of if the world we currently live in has become less safe.
