You best start believing in dead internet theories...
Ministerstvo obrany Spojených arabských emirátů uvedlo, že jeho protivzdušná obrana v neděli odrazila dva drony přilétající z Íránu.
Photographic memory isn’t real (sorry to that one person you swear can remember everything).
Your brain isn’t a camera. It’s more like a storyteller that fills in the gaps.
Here’s the science: https://theconversation.com/photographic-memory-is-a-myth-heres-what-research-really-says-about-remembering-278160
@TheConversationUS interesting read!
«Once the platforms got large enough to be unstoppable, once they captured enough of the regulatory apparatus to write their own rules, the libertarian rhetoric got quietly shelved like a college poster you took down before your in-laws came over.» https://matduggan.com/the-intolerable-hypocrisy-of-cyberlibertarianism/
«We have waited thirty years for the cyberlibertarian future to arrive and produce the promised harmonious community. It's time to face the facts. It's never coming. The bus left in 1996. The bus was never real.»
Good Idea: Clay as a PCB substrate
https://feministhackerspaces.cargo.site/Clay-PCB-Tutorial
A circuit board is just a substrate that holds conductive traces and components. It does not have to be fiberglass reinforced with brominated flame retardants, sourced through a supply chain running through conflict zones and toxic processing facilities. The Feminist Hardware project at mz* Baltazar's Laboratory in Vienna is experimenting with natural clay and terracotta as alternatives:
Locally sourced, fired, and traced with conductive paste.
The repository includes actual reproducible tutorials, not just theory. Electrical performance will not replace industrial PCBs, but the goal is to demonstrate that basic electronics do not require a global extraction economy, and to build a practical reference for what genuinely local, low-impact hardware production could look like.

I've been rereading Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles (last time I read them was about 20 years ago). It seems that the overriding theme is 'boys can experience emotional development, as long as they have a few centuries to do it in'.
The character of Lestat seems to be entirely based on a cat. He's pretty, stylish, and has zero comprehension of the concept of consequences. Lestat meets someone who introduces themselves as 'The Body Thief'. Said character suggests that they swap bodies for a day. Lestat agrees. Can you guess what happens next? But by the next book he talks to his friends before doing the stupid thing! Emotional development! He still does the stupid thing, progress takes time.
I think I first read Interview with the Vampire in my late teens. Louis is completely insufferable. I doubt anyone who didn't first read this book as a teenager can make it to the end.
@david_chisnall
I was introduced to Anne Rice via Exit to Eden and her other books under the pseudonyms Rampling and Roquelaure. I then read all her Vampire series available by 1990. I haven't read any newer books of hers. I got the impression Lestat was supremely bored and looking for anything to relieve or end his boredom. I ended up switching to almost exclusively reading science fiction and fantasy stories when it wasn't nonfiction.
Just had a panic attack when I realized I'd put a sandwich in the toaster iron 15 minutes ago and then forgotten about it
Good news! I forgot to ever plug in the toaster iron in the first place! Multidimensional chess.
@pluralistic fun fact: a self-proclaimed anarchist, Antonio Maggio, published the first 12-bar sheet music with "blues" in the title, in 1908. Fascinating story, detained without trial after McKinley was assassinated: https://www.bluescenter.com/2017/07/27/814/
@arod @pluralistic «The genesis of “I Got the Blues” encapsulates the long story of complex interactions between European and African American musicians» that's a way too long euphemism "for white supremacy stole from black people all along".

They grow up so fast.
@aral I wish I could laugh at it but it makes me want to cry 😢
One time, when I was a student, I was bitten by a mosquito in my bedroom. I tend to react quite badly to mosquito bites, so this was painful and I tried to find the mosquito, but couldn't.
The next morning, a spider descended from the ceiling onto my bedside table, deposited the desiccated corpse of a mosquito wrapped in web, then ascended back to the ceiling.
Rent paid, in full.

Oh hell yes, Wout Van Aert is participating in the Valkenburg World Gravel race, alongside Romain Bardet, Florian Vermeersh and many CX riders.
And the best thing is that it's happening **right now** and it's streamed by the assholes at Discovery+.
Nice race, better coverage than I've seen in the past years, even though it was still pretty unbalanced between the men's and the women's race. Great winners on both sides.
I hope some of the next races in the circuit will also be streamed. It was pretty good fun.
I ricchi ricchi, e i poveri poveri - qualunque cosa "povero" significhi.
In many open areas that used to be a habitat for wildlife and stray dogs, people today are being forced to use them as temporary living spaces due to harsh conditions.
This overlap between human life and nature creates a complex reality: tents are being set up in places that were once calm habitats for animals, and this shared presence sometimes leads to tension or fear on both sides.
The scene reflects more than just a “place”; it shows a crisis of pressure
