RIP social media. What comes next is messy. As social media splinters, how can we keep the new online spaces from devolving into toxic pits of despair? Petter Törnberg of the University of Amsterdam has some ideas. https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/05/rip-social-media-what-comes-next-is-messy/
@DaveMWilburn I smell desperation. This is not a deal they would have made unless they absolutely had to.
@mttaggart @DaveMWilburn interesting. explain?
Even "bad for life" is questionable, because despite our best efforts we haven't figured out how to sterilize the whole planet.
Anything we're doing that harms the environment harms _the environment we (and many other species) need to survive_.
If we continue to do so, we (and many other species) will die; much faster than this would happen "naturally".
But life will adapt and go on.
We're really only doing harm to ourselves.
@thomasfuchs Bad take. Sure, some sort of life will survive even our worst mistakes, cockroaches may tank a nuke and keep on trucking, but we're wiping out a shocking amount of biodiversity every day. Regardless of humanity's fate, someday millions of years down the line there will be a similar level of biodiversity again, fine, but it will be too late for zillions of species that we've failed.
Is it ok to exterminate a people if other people will repopulate their land eventually?
@davidgerard the CEO slogan "AI AI AI".
@njoseph @davidgerard In Greek, this is a lament.

Report: Spain's PM awards Francesca Albanese the Order of Civil Merit
PM Pedro Sanchez described Albanese as "a voice that upholds the conscience of the world".
Sanchez has also pushed for the EU to shield the ICC & UN from US sanctions. "The EU cannot stand idly by in the face of this persecution," he said.

It can't be repeated enough until even the last one finally understands it:
Do. Not. Buy. BambuLab!
They WILL fuck you over, it's their business model. Now they're going after developers who try giving back users access to their own machines through basically open pathways Bambu admits they just haven't gotten around to close down *yet*.

we joke that when the AI bubble pops and the managers can't afford the chatbot any more, the surviving companies will hire the people who know how shit works to clean up
but this is of course optimistic. observed behaviour is that they will instead do the stupidest and shortest-term thing they can do instead of ever doing it properly.
so what do you envision this might be?
for clarity, i think when the AI bubble pops, which I place as some time next year at the latest - and you can hear the screeching noises in 2026 - the current recession signs will turn into a full Great Depression 2, so those surviving companies will also be doing not so great
There is going to be a major shift to land and mineral speculation in a major socioeconomic & public health crisis.
People want to buy the United States for pennies on the dollar.
Does this instance work with third party mastodon apps?
@fedi Yes, there is a list of supported clients in the readme: https://codeberg.org/silverpill/mitra#supported-clients
Other clients should also work, but that's not guaranteed.

Every now and then I have one of those days where I discover all of these marvellous people on the Fedi and they're nearby (in some sense, whether physical or by interests) and they've been here for a couple of years and I don't know them. It's delightful! It's way more delightful than when there were only a few thousand people!
I do feel sad when I look at all the amazing folks who were here but left. I hope they all come back.
With Amazon killing off all the old kindles, they’re super-cheap right now. And it turns out that jailbreaking is a minor faff, but not too difficult, really. This one was £10 and is going to somebody who was pondering getting an expensive eink ebook reader just a couple of weeks ago. 😁

Ah super ! Merci de ce retour.
Zed going full aislop was not surprising unfortunately.
Conviction doesn't correlate to talent.
At least they stopped acting like it wasn't happening and fully embraced the brain rot.
