@quixoticgeek @DavidM_yeg In the US (not sure about Canada) the license and registration are tiny fees compared to what the roads cost to maintain, so it's effectively publicly subsidized car transportation (only).

Some stations where the layout or traffic pattern doesn't allow for or justify the expense of the gates (i.e. Maastricht, or Schiphol), they just have a card reader on a post you can use to check-in/out. Sure this reader has all the same issues as the one on the gates. But the faults due to the mechanics & sensors of the gates are at least avoided

In case it wasn't evident earlier. I really fucking hate these ticket gates. It's such inexcusably bad design

Thank you for letting me rant.

@quixoticgeek I once had a great time with a Dutch gate too. I had a valid German paper ticket and couldn't get out because there was nothing to scan. The station had no staff to let you out.

If I hadn't run into a train conductor who kindly let me out, spend the night on the platform I guess?

that's why i started this thread with the uncertain epiphany that python only supporting openssl is good bc that means i can explicitly build in (a) resistance to surveillance of build and packaging systems unlike pip RIP (b) support for much deeper forms of network context and protocols than python's INCREDIBLY half-assed netcode

Unfortunately, with OJF requiring all kinds of network address families1, systemd-analyze security onlyjunk-fans.service is no longer SAFE, only OK. But at a rating of 1.6, it's still good, only Postgres tops it with 1.3.

Mostly pointless metric, but it was fun to restrict it as much as possible.

  1. AF_UNIX to notify systemd, AF_NETLINK to talk to the kernel about WireGuard, and AF_INET + AF_INET6 to perform its reverse proxy duties. ↩︎

Now, if Pingora would be able to use passed fds... I'd still need all network addresses, because I'm making outbound connections too.

But I could remove the CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE capability. ...but would still need CAP_NET_ADMIN to talk to the kernel about WireGuard.

I guess I wouldn't win much with socket activation.

@DavidM_yeg roads aren't free to use. Unless you are a pedestrian or a cyclist, access to the roads is under license, and in most countries you pay some form of charge for road access. In the UK this is Vehicle Excuse Duty, which is wrongly often called "road tax". Etc...

Imagine sharing a link to your fediverse account to someone not on the fediverse, hoping they follow you.

Now imagine instead that the link you share takes them to a beautiful yet simple landing page that carefully guides them to the ideal platform, geographically closest, and helps them through the onboarding process, recommends the best desktop/mobile client and then follows you from their new account.

Stop dreaming. I'm building this. Wanna help?

I spent quite a bit of time on BlueSky for several months and found that if you’re a nobody there is close to no engagement. If you’re a somebody, the platform laps it up.

But on Mastodon the conversation flows irrespective of who you are.

Normally I update my Mac as it nears the end of operating system support, and it looked like my M1 MacBook Pro would last a good while. But the skyrocketing cost of RAM made me think twice, so I took my own advice and bought sooner rather than later. A great deal didn't hurt!

Much in this world depends on setting a good example.

In related news, here is Trump’s Secretary of Health telling podcast listeners how he is used to snorting cocaine off toilet seats, so germs are nothing to be scared of.

Tell me… are we still living in reality… or is everything just satire now?

Good faith dialogue.

This is the vast majority of what my interactions on Mastodon entail. Yes, there are the few snipers and trolls that migrated over from Twitter, but they are still quite rare.

Mostly I value the genuine desire to engage. And when it's absent, it's a lot easier to spot here because it's not the norm.

One of the most common objections I hear to climate action is: “But what about China?”

The person making this argument usually goes on to claim that China is doing nothing, while everyone else is making sacrifices. But that’s not what the data show.

Here’s the reality:

* As the U.S. doubles down on fossil fuels and blocks new wind and solar projects, its emissions are ticking up.

* In contrast, China’s emissions appear to have peaked — and may now be starting to decline.

* Last year, China installed a full half of all the world's new wind and solar energy.

* Over the past two years, China installed more new solar power each year than the U.S. has installed in total across its entire history.

* China's clean exports alone are cutting CO2 outside its borders by 1% year on year.

Of course no country can fix climate change on its own. But just as it's a global problem, progress in one place helps everyone.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-chinas-co2-emissions-have-now-been-flat-or-falling-for-21-months/

Carbon Brief

Analysis: China’s CO2 emissions have now been ‘flat or falling’ for 21 months - Carbon Brief

China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions fell by 1% in the final quarter of 2025, likely securing a decline of 0.3% for the full year as a whole.

Really struggling with what goes through the mind of people outsourcing their whole profession and skill to some company that probably won’t be there anymore in two years; and if the company is still there the product won’t be anymore; and if somehow both the company and the product makes it through it will be completely unaffordable.

@thomasfuchs my reality is that it's being pushed from the top and proficiency is being used as a signal in performance reviews.

The choices I see are a) follow the mandate, b) protest the mandate which will be used as a layoff pretense, or c) quit and try to find or build something in a toxic environment.

I'm doing a mix of A and B but C gets more tempting by the day.

curl has a great fucking API. the curl wrapper is my favorite network request library to use in rust and in fact i was building this exact shit very halfheartedly in rust for my rust zstd implementation so i could bootstrap the zstd build better until i realized that if i care about bootstrapping (which i do bc compression is useful for packaging) i simply cannot use rust hence the first round of work on python. which also has fucking COROUTINES and SIGNAL HANDLING and FORKING and UGH

and after learning about consteval in c++ i'm simply Not using rust unless and until i'm finally getting paid for it again. and curl also manages to strike an extremely thoughtful balance between functionality and like being a bootstrappable resource. wget2 seems like a research project atm or it just really wants to lean into the archival tool niche bc like why is brotli in your prerequisites lmao

So instead some people who can quit everything to do community defense and mutual aid and others do it on top of their jobs, childcare, eldercare, etc., and we see student walkouts and work stoppages on specific dates.
