I should address this since everyone is dragging it, apparently without actually reading EFF's stance on AI. Our stance is and has always been that copyright law is generally quite harmful and that expansions of copyright law have never benefitted the public or artists. Copyright is not the right tool to deal with the harms of AI, full stop.

AI has had incredible harms in many aspects of society, EFF does not ever deny that. There are ways to deal with these harms that don't entrench power.

If we use copyright as a tool we end up outlawing scraping. Do you like the internet archive? I sure do. And all this does is make it so open AI will have to pay rights-holders which are typically big studios anyway. Your works will still be trained on AI and you wont see the monetary benefit.

If you want to stop the harms of generative LLMs IMO the best place to start is by attacking their power. Tax them, collectively bargain for your rights (unions), abolish taft-hartely, etc.

Every time you view or like a post or take most actions on Bluesky or Blacksky your requests go through your Personal Data Server (PDS). It’s also the home of all your data.

If you optimize a model to find exploits, you should expect it to find them—and prepare for that. OpenAI didn't. They built a model, removed the safeguards, gave it the ExploitGym task, let it run, and didn't even monitor it. That's human decision-making.
