🎦 Our #Fediverse talks from #SFSCon are live.
I gave a talk about our existing building blocks of public-interest digital infrastructures like #Matrix #Wikimedia projects and #socialnetworks and how they are relevant to establish real and long term #digital #sovereignty. ✨

Question: "What did the president mean when he called a reporter 'piggy'?"
Karoline Levitt:
@randahl ...even on mute, my eyes instantly glossed over watching this....
Indiana was the name of George Lucas's own dog, a female Alaskan Malamute, who was the original source for the forename of the Indiana Jones character. Chewbacca from Star Wars also took inspiration from Indiana.[16]
People think that by adding statements like, "Don't do <whatever bad thing>" to LLM prompts, that the LLM will not do the bad thing. Folks, that's not how LLMs work. They just recreate patterns of words. They don't think, they don't understand, they don't take commands. They sometimes appear to do these things because they reproduce patterns and we are designed to detect patterns, so it looks like thinking to us. It's not. There's no logic. They cannot take orders or keep promises. #LLM #AI
Lots of truly terrible stuff is happening in the US government, but 2 senators just reintroduced the "Dark and Quiet Skies Act" to protect the sky from light pollution and satellite pollution and that's a really big step in the right direction! https://www.hickenlooper.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Dark-and-Quiet-Skies-Act-119th-Congress.pdf
@sundogplanets yes that's true message me directly so we can discuss further
Normally though Hare's malloc rounds the size to a power of 2 & looks up that "bucket". If null it falls back to arena allocation, or kernel-allocating a new arena. Otherwise it pops that entry off that bin's linkedlist & validates it. Regardless it saves the allocated size to this "chunk" & increments a profiling counter.
Meanwhile free locates the header fields from the pointer, decrements that counter, considers asking the kernel to free it, & pushes it onto the correct bin.
2/3!
Arena allocation btw means incrementing a pointer into free memory.
Given a size of 0 realloc's synonymous with free, given NULL its synonymous with malloc. Otherwise it validates that we've changing its effective size before allocating, copying the memory, & freeing. Could this be faster?
Upon shutdown it validates all remaining allocations, & would validate there aren't any if they provided themselves a way to check if they're crashing.
3/3 Fin! Later: CPU-specific runtime!

Paying $20/year for a personal website, a fediverse account, email forwarding, URL shortener, status log, pastebin, and a DNS service was already pretty darn good deal even before it included code hosting as an alternative to GitHub.
Definitely worth checking out!
I was feeling grumpy about an interview I agreed to a few days ago with the student-run campus newspaper, but that was such a great interview! I am so impressed by the questions the student asked me! Gives me hope: there are some fantastically talented students out there who are already doing excellent journalism!

J’ai demandé pour mon syndicat : on ne m’a jamais répondu.
@LeMonolecte
si c'est un "gros" syndicat qui en principe a les moyens, c'est pas la cible
il y a un petit comité qui trie les demandes, renouvelle, à tout hasard (?)
