Pōhuehue, NZ. I suppose you’d call me a leftie. Not a global thought leader.

I work for a charity, write things for a hobby, and advocate for improved public healthcare for people with a rare disorder.

I live by the Whau river in Tāmaki Makaurau with my family where I write bad poems and cook great food, occasionally at the same time.

New Zealand's liberal blog.

My PGP fingerprint has expired, and no-one used it anyway.

If you do not like politics, climate change, or the OIA, you are unlikely to enjoy following me.

Digital Ecologies, Infrastructures and Degrowth | Automation and Creativity | Postcapitalism and Political Ecology | Postgrowth computing.

Senior Lecturer in media studies and co-director of the Political Ecology Research Centre at Massey University, Aotearoa.

In a previous BirdSite life I was a disillusioned AI fridge, but here I'm an altogether quieter, more helpful appliance.

IRL I'm a retired filmmaker who lives in the front line of climate change... on a New Zealand beach at sea level.

I'm enjoying the peaceful atmosphere here. People are nicer.

I like to think that my 45 years of reporting on technology and business has left me sceptical rather than cynical but the behaviour of some tech companies is such that sometimes readers might be better served by the latter approach.

I live in rural #aotearoa/#newzealand in an earth brick house that looks like a Romanesque abbey. I spend my time coding, making electronic stuff, a bit of writing, some woodwork and a lot of gardening.
Weather permitting I kayak and hike.
I try to use my old, white, male privilege for good.
My header shows a mountain tarn on the Kepler track, with Te Anau in the distance (except the cloud got in the way). My profile is clipped from a shot taken on the Tongariro Crossing before I got tired.

Nigella Lawson said I was special on another platform. On here I'm still open to new celebrity endorsement.
CW: I sometimes accidentally type stuff out loud that probably shouldn't escape my brain 🤦‍♂️
