I went to upload some photos of benches, with GPS data, to OpenBenches, but it looks like Google has broken this :(

Making it opt-in would be sensible and absolutely fine, but I seemingly can't choose it at all.

@neil If you're using a NextCloud/ownCloud, the android client allows
"instant upload" from a watched camera folder. That preserves GPS tags (just checked). It also helps me not losing photos, but thats a different sory.

@neil I suppose an "openbenches app" would be a way around the issue, but a PITA in other ways.

@neil yeah I recall @edent ranted (well grumbled) about that quite a bit. Haven't heard anything since so I guess Google's not listening/interested.

We now have a workaround. But it involves installing a (FOSS) file manager an manually using that every time.
There's a prototype Android app for OpenBenches in the works - but early days.
