We don't need coins and should stop producing them. If we had a £1 note again we could get rid of all coins within three years. The only people who'd object sell purses, coin counters, and reinforced trouser pockets.

@anon_opin the reason for coins instead of notes is that they're more durable and smaller currency changes hands more frequently. US dollar notes only tend to last about 18 months on average for example, which is a big waste. However since the UK switched to polymer notes that are more durable now this might be a workable idea
