Brendan Larsen from Ngāmotu in Aotearoa and a member of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society took this stack over a couple of hours and estimates 14000 satellite trails. This is how bad it is now, it's set to get much much much worse - and then we lose Low Earth Orbit until the mess cleans itself up, if it cleans itself up. No weather satellites for forecasting, no GPS, and definitely no crewed spaceflight. All because of ego and greed. It must be stopped.
@Ali The New Plymouth astronomical society gave me one of his framed photos of the Milky Way over Taranaki as a thank you present! It's on my desk.
@Ali @sundogplanets no GPS? Why? GPS isn’t in Low Earth Orbit
@rachel @sundogplanets I will just take longer, all satellites have a lifespan and we may not be able to get replacement through LEO
@Ali @rachel @sundogplanets a LEO Kessler will not jeopardise launches into MEO/geostationary. I’m opposed to the destruction of astronomy caused by all these satellites but please get your facts straight. You are making a weak case that is easily refuted, this does not help the cause.
@Ali @sundogplanets i just did a podcast about it with an astronomer from the Polish Academy of Science (but in Polish): https://lewackiepitolenie.buzzsprout.com/1802226/episodes/19887084-madrze-gada-19-dr-marek-steslicki-o-satelitach
