"Historically, decompilation has been a brutally difficult, time consuming task." Now, AI is trivially doing it.
@404mediaco This is pure slopaganda.
Reverse engineering communities are not "shutting down because AI made it too easy".
They are shutting down because of the overwhelming influx of slop posing as reverse engineering, and the toxicity of the people flooding their communication channels with it.
@404mediaco Everyone I know from these communities has expressed that the "decompiled" game slop is entirely opaque, no more intelligible than the binary blobs they started with, and not at all faithful to the original being reversed.
The people doing that shit are just attempting to copyright-launder the original games, or even just to get social media cred and ad clicks and whatnot. They are not preserving the games in a way that lets them actually get built faithfully to run on new systems, or aiding in the discovery of unknown mechanics or anything of legitimate interest.
@404mediaco "trivially" -> "able to do so with an absurd amount of data center resources backed by literal trillions of tech cult dollars being thrown at LLMs for a massive loss"
@404mediaco I've seen their wall of text in decomp.dev and I only read bullshit. The LLMs are not doing the work but the decompilers they have developed. So it's another case of OpenAI funded propaganda.
Sounds like decomp.dev is a fishy site. Started in 2024 and it has no libre software available.
