What are you learning right now? I haven't had much time for self-study recently, but I'd love to know what y'all are exploring. Doesn't have to be tech, just whatever is sparking your curiosity!
@mttaggart Still plugging away at kanji for Japanese with Wanikani almost every day and it's still working 🙌🏼, struggling through ASL class again on Zoom 🤦🏽♀️, and just dipped into some ancient Greek last hour 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️... Τέχνην!
@mttaggart reading Ray Dalios book. Not really enjoying it though. Also how to repair a dishwasher
@mttaggart Japanese - studying at N3 level
@mttaggart NATS and JetStream. Nice change of pace from network stuff
@mttaggart
International fraud law and how to engage with overseas law enforcement.
@mttaggart I am finding sewing-machine and overlock-machine maintenance and repair incredibly relaxing. Like bicycles, this is a human scale technology. Each machine is a new mechanical puzzle, limited in scope but complex enough to provide a challenge.
@InfosecStuC I get that. I looooove bike repair.
@mttaggart About the first Africans. Spoiler: it took our ancestors millennia (!) to find out that coincidentally divided stones could maybe help to cut carcasses...

I keep flipping between Mandarin and Japanese, which means I make progress in neither but the journey is fun.
@mttaggart Been playing a lot more with #OCaml the last while, including taking a free online class. I'd used it for hobby projects in the past, but never felt like I had a sufficient grasp of the fundamentals.
@mttaggart There's kind of a list:
- Spanish (important when you live here)
- Electronics (looks like my next career involves a soldering iron)
- Music production
- How to correct my voice when speaking and singing
- Go (the board-game, not the programming language)
- Engraving, of the intaglio variety
- Drawing
- Brush-and-ink painting, occasionally
@mttaggart Korean
Dug up this old thing (they have one for numbers too)
https://www.ryanestrada.com/learntoreadkoreanin15minutes/
Some Pimsleur flashcards, and some Duolingo on top of it. Writing it all out as I go. Brainstorming actual expected conversations to prepare for.
I love languages, making them stick, and keeping them refreshed is tough.
@mttaggart azure python SDK recently, gonna start work on new homeowner projects here soon tho
@mttaggart The realm of physical media, especially cassettes and repairing old cassette decks
@mttaggart how to renovate an ancient 3D printer I picked up in a charity store. If I’m successful, there may be trouble ahead.
@drs1969 3D printers live with things like full flight sim gear in the realm of equipment I must not purchase because I want my family to live.
@mttaggart Been trying to make an earnest go at learning LyX/LaTeX recently.
The more I write longer works, the more I find Markdown feeling like a formatting limitation, and I really don't want to go further down the "use the web to layout your text" rabbit hole for things I'm not going to publish *on* the web.
So, I have decided to learn the old ways. It's been fun so far!
@valthonis Yay!
Not to derail you, but I have become a complete Typst convert. It's the same concept, with some modern affordances.
@mttaggart Hm. Looks like it's self-hostable without *too* much headache, too.
I will dig at this. Thanks, Taggart!
@mttaggart Ah, the tooling is open-source and installable, but the online interface isn't. That's eminently fair, honestly, and a fair-sight better than what a lot of MSPs will offer. 🤔
@valthonis Tbh I have never used the online one. Even my terminal text editor Helix has Typst syntax support, so that's how I use it. I even built my resume with it!
@mttaggart Says something that this one example in a git repo is *instantly* more compelling a demo to me than anything on Typst's (admittedly nicely done) site. 😅
@mttaggart mountain weather and reviewing AIARE before ski season
