I try to be really open, but the more I hear people talk about agentic coding the more it draws me away from web development. Sentences like "I burn 50 billion tokens a month" or "languages don't matter anymore, the agent does the coding" give me an uneasy feeling. #FrontKon
@matuzo completely understand. The enthiusiasm about one’s own obsolescence is mindboggling.
I think a lot of people are exhausted in general. I don’t remember being as overwhelmed with work ten years ago. Looking at it with kindness, maybe a lot of people who go along with it really go for AI to try and gain back a feeling of control/confidence. Particularly in “full stack development” where people sell themselves as, and then are expected to be, superheroes who can do everything super well.
@matuzo I assume nobody knows how much CO2 is emitted by 50 Billion tokens.
@matuzo in the future there will be a lot of woodworking and other trade businesses with very good websites and internal software.
@matuzo yeah, I took a peek at the talks at the local devfest this year and they're so heavily AI-based that I actively don't want to go. I enjoyed it the last time.
Latest I heard was that even if the big providers differently raise their token prices, lots of companies will just move over to Chinese hosted agents, and brrrr.
Do not like this timeline.
@matuzo best practice software development seems largely dead. But luckily there's still a decent amount of people who are actually passionate about programming.
@matuzo I wonder would these people also have used WYSIWYG editors? If not, why not? It seems like the exact same thing - only what the final facade looks like matters
