It's the kind of auroras right now where it just looks like a greenish smudge to your eyes, but then you take a photo and it's ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
Please enjoy this lovely instrument (a camera) that lets us see a bunch of colours too faint for our eyeballs!
@sundogplanets how does the camera improve the visibility here? long exposure?
@silvermoats long exposure and also better sensitivity to red at low surface brightness. Our eyes aren't good at that.
@sundogplanets Is that a STEVE extending from east to west across the tops of your images?
@jiawen No, unfortunately I think it's a jet trail. I haven't seen STEVE for sure yet!
If I only share pretty pictures of the sky will that make the satellites go away?
(I know the answer to this question... back to work...)
@sundogplanets every time I pay Comcast for internet I start looking at options and that ends with starlink in the best bet for where I live in suburban America. Then I come here and remember maybe paying Comcast isn’t the worst.
@sundogplanets Will singing and dancing make them go away? Will tourists in love with the Aurora Borealis make them go away? Back to work. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/northern-lights-dene-culture-cloud-cover-9.7361207
@sundogplanets Pretty pictures of the sky for everyone is the reward for all the hard work of making the shittalites go away.
@sundogplanets some Aurora Australis in Tasmania tonight - sigh too far away for me!
@sundogplanets is it ever bright enough to see well with the naked eye?
I've only ever seen them from a plane over northern Canada in winter and they just looked like wispy clouds to me. I thought they were cirrus until I realized I was at 37k feet (which seems high in polar regions in winter) and they were above me, and changing shape slowly.
I'd like to see them from the ground one day - is it worth the effort, or are pictures and imagination best?
@flipper I * have* seen auroras that look like this naked-eye, but not very often. It is definitely worth seeing!
@sundogplanets Looks awesome, thanks for sharing!
I really want to go to bed but how can I go to sleep with the sky doing THAT
@sundogplanets Thank you for letting uns take part in that view :-D.
(I had this camera sees different thingie once with an ancient s/w film, an old Leica and an infrared filter.
Took a close-up from a simple white flower.
Letting the film being developed, and rushed home, to find the flower still blooming. On that Film it had a wild black/grey/white pattern. Probably for a bee the flowers look like that but in colour.
Yep. That's a problem.
