For it. :)
One of my focuses of late has been thinking hard about the words I use. As part of that, I'm also trying to learn to not think of the things I enjoy in a negative way. Reclaiming is wonderful, but I see a pattern in my own life where what I was actually doing was making myself numb to the details of a thing by making jokes about it.
I wrote a bit about an adjacent example a while back:
@RussSharek @WeirdWriter That's a really good point. Making self-deprecating jokes can be just another way of trying to slide past getting too invested.
@RussSharek @WeirdWriter In the past, I've tended to make self-deprecating jokes as sort of the first step in a two-step dodge away from pain. Jab at myself, and then use the ego-rebound to propel myself into the character direction I actually wanted to go. A sort of social feint.
Because being direct about how I wanted to be perceived was too much of an investment...and also, "cringe."
So now, when I feel like making a self-deprecating remark, I force myself to make it...and then sit in it.
And feel what it would actually be to BE that thing. And just...accept that being that way would be alright, too.
It's okay to love things others would consider trash, or dorky, childish or foolish. It's okay to be sincere and make others wince with your earnestness. The world doesn't end. And maybe you deepen your inner self.
@RussSharek And thank you for sharing! I needed to get something out about how much I utterly detest that online phrase! By the way you should also read https://sightlessscribbles.com/posts/how-fanfiction-is-literary-resistance/
@RussSharek @WeirdWriter
Embrace The Cringe.
Life is so much more fun that way.
