Okay, another #DIY question for this sunny Saturday: I'm patching a long run of #drywall with a new piece cut lengthwise, so 2x8. I had thought I would put the cut edge up so that taping and mudding would cover and protect the crumbly edge, but now that I think about it maybe I should put the finished edge up because that's the edge I assume is tapered to make a smooth joint. Recommendations?
@dlakelan Makes sense, except this is on a garage and will just terminate at the the concrete sill without trim. Does that change your advice?
@msbellows
My biggest advice is do NOT leave it in contact with the concrete, it WILL wick moisture up into the board. leave a good 3/4 inch gap
Right. Leave it off the ground whichever way you install it. Once you mud it it won't matter which edge is up, so might as well leave the nice finished edge down. Just don't have it contact the floor.
@mastodonmigration @dlakelan So I want the cut edge up, so it's butt to butt?
Yes.
It doesn't really matter since when you mud it that is all going to get filled with spackle.
But, the finished edge down will look better. Just keep it off the floor.
Edit: To keep it off the floor just use a few 1/2" or 3/4" pieces to shim it up, and remove them once it is screwed in place.

@JamesWNeal Okay, I'm getting really solid, helpful advice pointing in diametrically opposed directions, so I'mma ask you nice people to please back up and read all the comments on the butt up/tapered up Q and see if you can find consensus on at least the pros/cons?
@msbellows
The tapered end is for the joint yes. if you put it up and the cut edge at the bottom is the bottom edge gonna be behind a trim? thats what I'd do.
