When under sail, the propellors are turned by the flowing water and drive generators that power the ship's systems and living quarters. It was originally planned to have sails made up of solar cells to reduced to 0 relaiace on fossil fuel generator but that didn't pan out as the technology isn't quite there yet for solar-cell sails.
