Happiness is nigh unachievable.
@thegibson I felt like this for a long time. Then I realized that I can be happy AND angry. I can be happy AND frustrated with the world. I can be happy AND scared, or worried, or even sad.
We’re taught that happiness is the absence of those things, but I don’t think that’s true. It seems more like happiness is the ability to see the good, to generate joy, and to make a positive dent in the world — even a tiny one.
@thegibson let happiness absence' be (and if it doesn't come, so be it!)
@thegibson sometimes spite is all we get, but it can be enough i think.
@thegibson Yeah, it's some bullshit. Still, nothing for it but to keep trying. The horrors persist, but so do I. -_-
@thegibson Spend some time with the Four Noble Truths:
* All of life is suffering
* Suffering is caused by attachment
* There can be an end to suffering
* The Eightfold Path is a way to that
We generally get too focused on externals, or caught up in ruminations on our own desires and failings. Letting go is very hard to do, but necessary. Happiness is the result of freeing yourself.
