Just started the search engine episode on the #forkiverse , and man that just bums me out. Many people including myself reached out to give them blocklists and give help with moderation and whatnot, and I'm sure there are people still on there that could have been given mod roles, and they could have passed the hat to pay server bills. I really hope their takeaway is "well we tried something and didn't follow through and it turns out you can't leave an unmoderated space online on autoplay" rather than "the fedi doesn't work"
@Anna_There
The hard fork guys are like textbook insufferable high status liberals. The discussion around "we can just pull the plug because nobody started a business" is just like... Yeah you were never going to understand what this place is about because you didn't meet a single fuckin person or have one droplet of understanding what digital community is about.
@jonny exactly
I guess search engine was always in between and of course they had a really complicated history with the podcast before. I don't know if they really understood what the problem was there
And if they understand what's the problem is now
Effectively self insert reply all fanfiction

I am going to be terminally Stan right now and say I think PJ could have figured it out if he still had alex with him and not these assholes, I can easily see a PJ/alex run instance because Alex would have been the neurotic mod and fedi explorer and PJ could have found weirdos to try and dunk on alex for only finding persnickety fedi.
man I sort of can't stand these non-PJ guys. At least PJ is honest about like "I just sort of am poisoned by addictive social media and since this wasn't that and was people just being nice I wasn't hooked." These other guys are like "I tried really hard to do anything but be on twitter and now I'm forced to go back" when in fact they did not try at all.
"I asked Sam altman to make a good social media site" give me a fuckin break dog. Just tell me you have no idea how the landscape of power works
I wish Evan would have pushed PJ harder on like "bro everything you are saying you want was in fact already on there you just didn't even try"
Wow and not even a nod to "there are still all the other instances out there still doing an ongoing and successful independent federated social media network" and instead say "this dream is dead." Just sort of terrible form and even terrible journalism. Someone listening would go away knowing nothing about the thing they were covering
@jonny extractivist. who could have predicated?
@jonny they always just wanted a place to advertise, and not actually be part of a community. Glad that some wanted to actually find a place that felt good to be around
@jonny It looks like the people on there that were fairly active are moving to a bunch of long established servers (I've seen at least 3 going to sunny.garden, they must have done some outreach) so the ones who want to build a community here are sticking around, but yeah it sounds like a terrible take-away on the part of the guys "running" the show.

@SRLevine
Me too, of those ive talked to. Seems like a good group
@jonny it's of course the second. 😐
I liked the show but they show often that they don't think about their privilege.
One of them said he has to go back to x now.
And at the end he can do that because the tech bros won't let him suffer like the rest of us...
Also they interviewed Ezra Klein without any mention of the criticism
