@herrbischoff They are not unaware of the human issues, they simply have decided that it doesn't matter to them. There are plenty of replies to this post that illustrate the same logic. People really love their stuff and they think that being able to track their stuff without alerting a thief is more important than preventing stalking.
@evacide Isn't there a law in America that companies use to prevent consumers from modifying their products? Is there any campaign/lobbying to encourage apple to do so?
Whilst I appreciate your work and EFF's; that piece of article serves no purpose apart from being a rage bait, a name and shame, or causing us paranoia to obsessively check if there is a hidden one nearby.
I hope I'm missing something here.
As a side note, the psychology to seek justice instead of crime prevention seems to have gone mad in certain countries. That's another story. @herrbischoff
@ada @herrbischoff Counterpoint: shaming people who are doing harmful things is good, actually.
@evacide And with that we’re back to that privileged arrogance only those not affected by the effects of their decisions can ever exhibit so brazenly.

@evacide the defenses are all "my property rights are more important than a vulnerable person's safety"
@evacide
I have cheap Chinese "Android Find Hub" devices which can be silenced with a drop of glue on my family bikes.
So, nothing new...
@nicolaottomano Is there something in this post that implies that anyone thinks people taking steps to silence BLE trackers is a new development?
@evacide
The thing is that, if silencing those devices is as easy as applying a drop of glue, there is no point in stopping a company selling them.
@nicolaottomano It is actually somewhat harder to do consistently and effectively than you may think. I say this as a person who has worked with several survivors who have found trackers that were tampered with but not effectively silenced.
@evacide That strikes me as probably being a feature, not a bug, for the company. It increases the market, and they know it.
@evacide this reads like the people who try to claim anyone using grapheneOS is a criminal.
@spycrab The people who make this claim are law enforcement officials justifying their searches. The person writing this article is a journalist. Power dynamics matter.
@evacide I don't believe that at all but at the same time I haven't been bookmarking conversations with 'civis' about graphene so I can't substantiate that.
Likewise in this 2026 I would not try holding up journalism as some favorable or honest profession (put another way; yes power dynamics matter. Given the current state of journalism the power dynamics of a journalist and the population is not much better than the police and the population [not at all the same but not much better] )
If this is really just them bitching about a tool existing then fine, that's there right and they can be ignored easily: but usually this stuff turns into a call for regulation. Which is obviously no bueno.
It's the same argument with guns and many other tools.
@spycrab If you want to have an argument with the imaginary people in your head, you are welcome to do it somewhere other than my replies.
@evacide the airtag notification still doesn't work on android, right?
@solonovamax It works on Android 6.0 or later.
@evacide wait, since when?
@solonovamax Since the summer of 2023.
@evacide god damnit. I really liked their "battery packs" for my car/luggage/etc. I don't need more, but regret giving them any money now.
@evacide Having worked on tech teams for 20 years, it’s baffling how often obvious human issues get ignored.
A couple of years ago, prompted by a conversation, I carefully tried to ask the women I know whether they had personal experience with stalking and/or being touched without consent. It’s a weird conversation to have, delicate, and it requires trust. It wasn’t something they’d usually discuss with men.
The response floored me: 100%. They had all been stalked.
