@emilymbender @timnitGebru Another potential "scapegoat AI" trial event, looks like.
Who'd actually be accountable IF this "nearly" ever turned to "actually", I wonder? The AI's legal guardian?
I'm guessing by the time they puzzle that one out the actual culprit's long since bolted. Or at least been safely promoted.
"Regulatory agencies" always end up marketing agencies instead of actually regulating their namesaked industry. @emilymbender @timnitGebru
What say we simply OUTLAW #AI, because it's already violated every one of Asimov's dictums. It's a DANGER TO HUMANITY... It'll never happen though. Our overseers need it to keep us under control and the billionaires need it to better market their consumer crap at us https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics

Thank you so so much for the work you do, and for being such eloquent voices of reason and sanity in this madness.

+100. Just enforcing basic product liability is a foundational step. Of course, we have a regime in the USA hell bent on eliminating the entire concept of corporate responsibility, so liability is trending towards a ever lower bar.
@emilymbender @timnitGebru Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Damn it after reading this my brain did a bit of free association and now 99 red balloons is stuck in my head since we've basically turbocharged that scenario.
@emilymbender @timnitGebru WelcomePlease help us, we need food and we are crying from hunger. Please, if$20 🇵🇸🥹🤔
@emilymbender As in physics, it's a secondary position of a prime driving force - and this is obviously a byproduct of 'unbridled' Capitalism, which knows no such thing as 'too much'.
So the inevitable feedbacks - regardless of well-planned sleight of hand by the wealthiest Tech Bros - further propagate the wealthiest, and further bury the increasingly poorer.
Mass extinction events are rife with these 'vacuous middle' patterns, aligning with similar asymmetry.
Here's the news story cited in the article:

Great debunking here ☝️
"In fact, today’s LLMs and the chatbots they power are not poorly understood, nor are they powerful in the sense of being effective tools for this use case. They are systems for generating plausible looking text, built out of enormous, haphazardly collected datasets and then “fine-tuned” (that is, further trained) to be especially appealing to their intended users."
We are definitely in a technology "snake oil" phase.
Would like to issue an apology. This reply initially included a character image of a guy selling snake oil that people have pointed out is likely AI slop. This account has a strict No Slop policy and the image has been deleted. Again apologies. Particularly given the context of the post this is very embarrassing.
@mastodonmigration @emilymbender @timnitGebru Welcome to blocktown, Mastodon Migration!
@mastodonmigration adding an AI slop image to this thread (and anywhere but especially here) is... So gross
Why
Yikes, sorry. Did not realize it was slop. Apologies.
@mastodonmigration all good! Easy to tell when you're used to seeing it in ads everywhere 😑
@mastodonmigration
Image looks like AI slop which seems to undercut your point.
Apologies. Did not realize it was slop. Image deleted. 🤦♂️
@mastodonmigration so, about the image attached to this post... anything you feel like disclosing?
Apologies. Did not realize it was slop. Image deleted.
@mastodonmigration @emilymbender @timnitGebru snake oil is just a tool!
@mastodonmigration @emilymbender @timnitGebru oil snake is just a tool! ^^
@emilymbender @timnitGebru I want to agree. I just finished the AI Con and I don't think there was a sentence in there with which I disagreed, but...
I do tire of the knee jerk reaction of, "Let's pass more and/or better laws." We're now enduring an object lesson from Toddler in Chief in the limits of law. Law itself is actually a technology, one of humanity's first. Law is dual use like all technology, subject to capture and being wielded as a weapon by the wrong people, like all technology. The legal system, like _all_ systems, is subject to hacking, and moreover the best intended laws often have unintended consequences.
So here's another option. Let's
1) focus on raising better people, and
2) insure those people have the means, technological and otherwise, to ideally thrive but at least survive the shitstorm that's coming from our latest capitalist-techno optimists, regulation or no regulation.
Stop supposing any technology, including law, will "fix" things. It just grows the Machine and creates new attack surfaces.
