I'm working on rebuilding our weekend programming schedule for New Ellijay Television.

Part of my goal is to include at least 4 hours of children's programming.

I can do this by leaning on public domain cartoons. At this point I have a somewhat substantial library of them.

I can also include some public domain childrens live action adventure shows (SPACE PATROL, etc)

But I'd really love suggestions for other Open License childrens programming.

Live action or animated, public domain or creative commons. What might I have missed? Are there educational shows? Puppet shows? Live action comedies?

@ajroach42 Maybe not open-license, but have you thought about contacting the type of indie Kickstarter-funded cartoons that get distributed on Youtube?

e.g. ones like:

(I don't know how the question would be recieved by them in terms of likelihood or social politeness. I only vaguely know that the indie-cartoon-maker community, like, exists, as a space, and don't know if there IS a space of "indie TV channels" for there to be any overlap to have preexisting norms.)

I haven't looked too deeply down this road because I'm not super familiar with the scene and I prefer strongly to work on personal connections where I can, rather than cold calls.

But I am not opposed to looking in this direction, especially if I can find some folks who are more familiar with the space to make some introductions.

There are only vaguely Indie TV channels out there. Me, @rstv, OSI74, The Monster Channel, Eternal Family... I'm not really aware of any others, although surely there are some.

I have one show in syndication that I met through OSI74, and another I considered and rejected (it was almost perfect, but unfortunately super religious behind the curtain.)

I'm interested in further exploring this space though!

@ajroach42 My other thought would be maybe asking National Collections about permissions and costs? Like the National Film Board of Canada (I knowa lot of their math animations are trippy and cool) or the BFI or things. Which might also be a dead tree to bark up but e.g. here's one Youtuber's experience contacting the BFI and paying for a license (including a "that's way too much. can I pay less?" "sure okay.") to just put one of the old movies in their collection on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsSevbJPkY8

@gaditb I've done a bit of this (we have a couple of LoC films and a BFI film in circulation) but it's not exactly what I'm looking for right now (mostly because I'm unaware of specific children's programming that fits the bill.)

Also, I know I've asked this before but the trail has gone dry each time so I'm asking again:

I'd love to get some Sports shows for NETV.

I'm especially interested in pro wrestling, so if you know of any indie wrestling leagues that already produce a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA wrestling show, or who might be open to having their programming syndicated (for free, I'm broke) on an indie TV network, let me know!

I have a crew that can take raw footage and turn it into a program with tighter editing and announcers and music and other things of that nature.

I'm also down for dirt track racing or other motor sports, and really any sports in general. (Omega Ball! Your local Softball League, whatever.)

I'm not looking for, like, actual pro-level anything. I want the folks who are doing this stuff for fun, who happen to have a camera set up.

Have you looked for nearby high school sports, that might be up for (and into) being broadcast on a nearby TV station?

Wrestling-wise:
I know a lot a lot of indie wrestling promotions will just stream their events onto Youtube, and have a decent back-catalog (and might see "here's an old show on TV" as a nice place to tack on a "our next show is in-person in XYZ at <date>, scan the QR code to buy tickets" in one or two places). I don't know how much they expect from Youtube Ads from that (if any). Here's a search for shows that took place in Georgia in 2026 that had some online stream:

@gaditb It takes extra caution when working with kids.

The local highschool does broadcast their football matches, but I think they're doing it illegally? They aren't getting releases from the parents of the opposing team, so I'm not sure how they can legally broadcast.

I'd prefer to avoid working with minors for the legal complications.

@ajroach42 Local football and basketball matches get broadcast by a City+high-school partnership Youtube channel near me (among other events. A lot of board/committee meetings.), so I assumed there was some system or standar-operating-procedure in place.

Makes sense to be overcautious there, tho, yeah.

@gaditb Wrestling wise, I've talked to a couple of promotions and gotten close to a deal a couple of times, but I don't know the indie wrestling world as well as I'd like to I don't have enough of an idea of who to talk to, and the promotions we have talked to have all fallen through for one reason or another (frequently, they're rag-tag/volunteer efforts, so no one feels like they have the authority to just Say Yes, or the guy who does have the authority to Say Yes is also just swamped with other responsibility and so we get forgotten about.

OR they're very professional outfits that want to be treated seriously, and they're worried that association with our raggedy streaming service will prevent them from getting picked up as a feeder for AEW or WWE.)
