I was given by a mutual to consider our kitchen stove, which is an old restaurant stove, we're thinking from maybe the 1960s.
Six burners, two ovens, and a griddle. Everything but the small oven is still in working condition.
It's been in the house for maybe 45 years or so? It cost about 500 in 1984 dollars, which was a *lot*. But in a group house, one needs a serious kitchen.
@GeePawHill touch controls on stoves are soooo annoying. I haven’t met a single person who likes those.
So I have this, idunno, 70 year old LP gas stove, and she has this 3 year old electric fancy stove, and she hates hers, and we love ours.
(Note: It's not pristine. We've done maintenance on it many times. But the maintenance was *possible*. Right now, the burners need, frankly, a good sand-blasting. Soon, maybe? Maybe?)
@GeePawHill some of this is just survivorship bias, no? "they don't make 'em like they used to" because the cheap crap from the past didn't last long enough for us to say that about it
@aburka @GeePawHill I've fixed almost every appliance in my house. Most annoying was replacing the micro switches in the microwave. It is the newest in the house. Stove got new ignitors before 5 years. dishwasher a new thermister. Why is it the older appliances to much longer to break?
@aburka Possibly? And what would that mean, "survivorship bias", in this context?

And in the thinking about it, and talking over w/sweetpea, I am reminded, there was a time when a major capital expense like a cookstove, it was meant to last *decades*.
My daughter, over on the other side of the house, has a fancy convection(?) stove with mad-sexy electronics and such like.
But.
You know.
It's <3 years old, and it doesn't work.
