Americans will keep 3 cats cooped up in a tiny apartment where they're obviously stressed, miserable and desperate to get out and then have a go at Europeans for letting our cats roam outside. Maybe if it isn't safe to let your cat out where you live, you just shouldn't have one

It's a bit more complicated than that. In Canada we have a lot of song birds becoming extinct thanks to outdoor cats. These owners like cats because they can let them out and forget about them. Meanwhile, the cat is burying its poop in YOUR garden and it's dangerous to your health.
