Parts of it, for certain people, makes a fair amount of sense. But it's this series of tradeoffs in time, energy, equipment, etc. I like a few things selfhosted because they make sense for me, but a ton I absolutely never would. I can understand people's urges to do it though!

Except for email. Holy hell fuck selfhosting email. When did that cross over into the pure hellscape land, I do not know.

I write books on self-hosting. The overwhelming majority of people shouldn't self-host.

(I do think that sysadmins hosting as mutual aid is viable, so long as the sysadmin understands their limits and doesn't overload themselves.)
