I mean what if we ultimately avoid the full Hitler pretty much entirely because the guy is an asshole? Cause I don't feel like we've learned any single fucking thing as a society, but we are by and large starting to agree this guy is an asshole.

Like, if we get through all this and still can't agree "uh, fascism is bad, and if that means we need to put the everloving fear of reprisal into roughly 25% of society, so fucking be it" we are still fucking cooked my friends...
This was not a controversial position in 1946 - at least among the larger public. And it was not a controversial position for a reason.
I feel like this has always been the danger in treating Trump like a singularity, rather than the logical byproduct of pre-existing white supremacy, fascist ideology, and the restoration of an aristocratic class in the high church of capitalism, otherwise known as the United States. Pretty much everyone but antifascists has some version of "Trump being Trump" that lets them bury this without ever examining the root causes. I can see it happening in real time and it's maddening.
