This is exactly why the Trump admin is hobbling the Dept of Ed.
Under previous admins, the OCR in Dept of Ed would investigate this under Title IX. This is obviously administrative negligence for so heinous a breach of a student's right to have access to an education without gendered sexual violence.
But under this admin's interpretation of Title IX -- and its destruction of previous guidance and rules -- schools are allowed to coddle predators, rapists, and sexual harassers because holding them accountable is tantamount to 'subversive gender ideology'.
For fascists, there is no rape or sexual violence. It's just normalized 'sex.'
For Cornell and the men in charge of Cornell, an essay to mitigate 'sex' that 'perhaps got out of hand' is an appropriate response -- especially considering who these young men's families are. (These are not poor 'boys.')
However, every Title IX advocate knows schools have been slapping the wrists of rapists *for decades* (remember Stanford?).
