🇪🇺 How many languages do you speak?
From everyday expressions to words that capture an idea or feeling in a way your own language doesn’t, languages give us different ways to understand and connect with the world.
Today, we celebrate Europe’s linguistic diversity and the 24 official languages of the EU. 🇪🇺
What’s your favourite one?
Catalan: spoken by 10 million people in Europe, more than about half of the 24 languages you list as official in the EU. A scandal.
@EUCommission At one point got up to six, but my fluency in several is eroding. (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swiss German -Zurich dialect.) Zürichdeutsch is nearly gone, Italian is crumbling, and my German is barely functional and frankly embarrassing.
Each of them has been my favorite at some point, though! And some time in each country would probably restore a lot.
Catalan, 10 million speakers yet not an official EU language.
We are only the same number of speakers than Hungarians, Czech, Swedish or Portuguese, and double the speakers of Croatian, Danish, Finnish or Slovak, but still, not official.

@EUCommission English and Swedish, and also trying to learn German. Esperanto might be my favorite since it's such an interesting language, even though I don't speak it myself.
