A tip to new users of Mastodon:
By adding a profile picture you make it easier for others to recognize individual users. If you don't, people like me see a follower list where everyone looks the same.
The best profile picture is a selfie. The second best is any other picture than the default.

You can take your most liked mobile phone and scan it as usual, to be sure...

Please could you find a way to soften this language? When I look at those I follow and see on mastodon - it’s people who are non male and non white who have profile pictures that aren’t selfies. IMO they don’t feel as safe / confident on this predominantly white male platform 😢
Their profile pictures aren’t second rate right? And we want them to feel included right?
For my part, I plan to remove my selfie and go back to a picture of a Pokémon I had in 2008 😎

A lot of these with no picture, zero followers & no bio are more than probably bots & should be blocked.

Indeed, we humans are visual people.
Pimp that profile with your selfie or if you don't want to show your face put up a picture of your cat or dog. Or get creative and upload a caricature drawing of yourself. Anything as long as it is original.

I suggested to allow users to choose among more profile pictures than the one grey elephant picture (for example different animals and different colours), for those people who don't want or who are not able to upload a picture.
But it is a feature too easy for the Mastodon team to implement.
@randahl if Mastodon people start to use profile pictures, I bet half of them will be cat profile pictures. 😂

Or get a drawing of yourself. There's people here on Mastodon that offer commissioned artwork here, often for little (really too little) money. A great way to support an artist and get a unique, personal profile image. And one you can use anywhere, not just on Mastodon of course.
