Cybersecurity defenders face an ever-growing flood of professionalized online criminal activity: hacking, scams, ransomware, fraud, etc., etc.
One thing many online criminal groups have in common is, they’re located in impoverished countries where the standard of living is brutal, life is precarious, and many people think that stealing from people in first-world countries is reparations for the harms of #imperialism and #colonialism.

Everything is political. If you work in cybersecurity and you don’t want to spend the rest of your career fighting an ever-increasing tsunami of online criminal sludge, you should be advocating for your government to be actively working to improve economic conditions in the developing world. It won’t just make their lives better; it’ll make your life better too. A rising tide lifts all boats.

P.S. Let me put this another way… If the human race doesn't change course drastically and soon, then choices we've made will lead to the deaths of _billions_ of people. As this becomes clearer to people in the developing nations with the worst prospects, they will become more and more desperate, and it will become even more impossible to build physical or virtual walls tall enough to keep them out. We can find a way to help them, or we can suffer their wrath. Choose wisely.

Therefore, the one thing that would have the most impact on online criminal activity isn’t building better defenses, and it isn’t raising security awareness, and it isn’t beefing up law-enforcement. The one thing that would have the most impact is improving economic prospects in these countries so that crime is no longer people’s best (and sometimes only) path to escape poverty.
