"If someone asks me, “Why do you read books?” I would answer without hesitation: “I read to think.” Books are read to think. Then, why think? To avoid living a life swayed by others’ thoughts. One must live by their own thoughts and philosophy. Even if countless people claim that living in a certain way is correct, one must navigate the world by their own standards without being swayed. Thinking is a dialogue with oneself. Do not ask others about how to live; ask yourself. This is why the final question of humanities and classical philosophy converges on “Who am I?” One must find the reason for their existence through dialogue with oneself. Humans are born free, with free will. However, modern people who have lost the ability to think—a dialogue with themselves—tend to live according to standards imposed by the world. Why has thinking disappeared? Because of smartphones. Smartphones only inject stimulating videos and information. One can think even while using a smartphone, but I believe such thinking is not the “good thinking” that benefits our lives. Good thinking is deep thinking. It connects us with the deeper self we were unaware of, awakening the giant dormant within. Through reading, I awakened the giant that allowed me to receive the “Author of the Year Award.” To think, one must seek help from the giants in books. Thinking alone is limited to one’s current level. To grow, one must read books by those wiser than oneself to elevate the quality of their thoughts. One must attain a perspective of thought high enough to hold the world in the palm of one’s hand. Early last month, I read Richard Dawkins’ *The Blind Watchmaker*. Dawkins is currently the world’s most influential scientist and bestselling science writer. He is the author of *The Selfish Gene*, which was also a bestseller in South Korea. In 1987, he simultaneously won the “Royal Society Literature Prize” and the “Los Angeles Times Literary Prize” for *The Blind Watchmaker*." The part about Dawkins is highlighted.
