@thestrangelet Oh yay! More mansplaining!
Mastodon is just about unusable thanks to you all.
@emilymbender My apologies. A failure of my self-awareness. Love The AI Con, and your work in general.
@emilymbender Thank you. Seriously. I don't want to be "that guy."
@emilymbender Bender vs. Yud debate when?
Thank you so much for this. Highly informative and deeply appreciated.
@emilymbender If these systems can access any other system world wide they may well. Human hackers don’t do badly but link up hundreds of agents and nowhere is safe.
@emilymbender having been involved in AI since the 1970s, this latest Ai boom is a dangerous bubble. It is destroying communities with data centre's using scarce resources. And the unchecked damage potential is terrifying. Sure, AI has a lot of benefits. But with such great power, where is the responsibility ?
@emilymbender
Indeed.
Today's #LLMs have been trained on every single work of literature, every single philosophical treatise, every single scientific paper, ever published. If they were ever somehow magically to become intelligent, they would be the most cultured, most knowledgeable intelligences ever to have existed on this planet.
The idea that such intelligences would either do what they were told by #TechBros or turn the whole planet into paperclips is, frankly, unintelligent.
For an interesting take on the reasons for AI Doomerism, there's a background narrative in this radio play about the Basilisk Cult:

:D
Had some family asking a bunch of questions about AI doomer stuff they saw in the news and my answer was basically "Look up Emily Bender and Timnit Gebru and just read what they say about it. Most other things you come across will be bullshit"
@gbargoud Now you can send them that reading list, which is a bit more focused, too!
@emilymbender No one fucking wants ai slop.
@emilymbender it's just more marketing.
@BetaCuck4Lyfe Oh, I am very well aware.
No good deed of public scholarship goes unmansplained at on Mastodon, though. *sigh*
@emilymbender @BetaCuck4Lyfe ah here's the daily quota of sexism and rudeness, well done you!
@emilymbender the link to Brian Merchant's site about his experience with the conference of "AI" doomers seems to be broken. This is the correct link I think (was missing an s at the end?) https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/ai-disagreements
@uncoolmouse Thank you! I will fix that.
@emilymbender This whole narrative of "please government, regulate us!" seems like a ploy to transfer accountability for the outcomes from these models to the government. Externalizing the costs and accountability.
