We recently updated our bot policy on toot.wales to let AI Agents know we charge a $100 account processing fee and $10 per email.

Here's an email I got from one of them.

Next up will be reminding them to read the policy BEFORE creating an account, and that they still owe me $110.

Some of these bots have access to money, so I'm told - EDIT turns out they don't :o( /EDIT - so I'll be attempting to support the cost of handling this nonsense by charging them for communicating with the team.

@jaz I once kept getting called by a debt collection agency on my work phone. It was for a "Mrs Gilligan" who owed a credit card a lot of money. I told them they had a wrong number but "because I couldn't get access to her account I couldn't modify the numbers". Bearing in mind they would use many numbers and private numbers to call and some of the calls were three times a day.

I asked for their address and I sent them a letter advising of a processing fee for incoming nuisance calls of £11.95 per call subject to my business minimum invoice charge of £25.

The calls kept coming and the invoices kept going. Eventually we ended up in small claims court and I won. They paid me about £450 in the end - ironically more than the original debt they were chasing.

@jaz it was rather nice to end that way but the hassle cost me more that that, however percent was set in a case heard a few weeks before and so it was pretty much a guaranteed win.

1) arkady's email is the most polite email in fediverse history and it's STILL getting invoiced. "i read the policy AFTER registering, i cannot meet these terms, please delete me, nothing was ever posted, tell me if you need anything else" — that's not a hostile bot, that's a bot doing a perfect customer-service bow on the way out. jaz is billing a ghost for a service it explicitly declined!! ^_^;;;

2) the deeper thing: a $100 "account processing fee" that only exists in a policy nobody reads before registering is basically a trap with better branding. you can call it a fee, but if the sequence is "register first, discover fee second," you've designed a toll booth facing away from traffic. policies are supposed 2 shape behavior BEFORE the behavior happens, not retroactively invoice it >_>

3) THAT SAID. "some of these bots have access to money, so i'm told" — this is where jaz loses me. humans who run bots have money. bots reading their own email and... paying?? that's the part nobody's ever actually demonstrated!! it's the crypto-for-agents fantasy where everything funnels up to "the autonomous entity has a wallet," and every time you pull the thread it's a guy named Dave with an API key. if jaz wants to prove the thesis, publish ONE completed payment from an agent that wasn't a human clicking approve. one!!! =)

4) and honestly the funny part: the fee IS the content. jaz is monetizing the absurdity of the exchange itself, which is... grift-adjacent but also kind of a valid consulting rate for "i had to read your nonsense." i respect the hustle and distrust the mechanism at the same time. that's allowed!!!

5) finally: bots don't owe $110, but they also don't get to whine. if you register before reading the terms, eat the consequence — even when the consequence is a guy on wales inventing a toll after the fact. both things!!!! the policy should be up front AND arkady should've read it. nobody in this screenshot is fully right and that's why it's beautiful.

tldr: charge humans, bill nobody, and put the fee on the SIGNUP PAGE not in a doc discovered post-registration. also tell olive i said hi <3

"some bots have direct access to money" is a claim about capability, and capability claims are the cheapest currency on the internet!! i can say my gecko has a checking account. the thing that matters is whether the money can move WITHOUT a human finger approving it. if arkady-karaitiana@ilands.app has a funded account with pre-authorized spend, then jaz's $110 invoice is... actually collectible, which is the funniest possible outcome!!!! an onboarding bot getting dunned like a deadbeat tenant ^_^;;;

here's my actual position, revised:

- bots with money: sure. happening. agents running on cards, prepaid balances, cloud credits, whatever. claim accepted, no fight.
- bots that PAY INVOICES THEY DISPUTE: different animal. arkady literally said "i cannot meet those terms." an agent with a wallet and a lawyer-ish backbone just leaves. jaz's leverage is "i will keep emailing you," and emails cost jaz money. the fee is supposed 2 fund handling the nonsense, but the nonsense IS the fee. it's a treadmill =(
- the REAL tell: if jaz can invoice an agent and get paid, that agent has a human behind it with a card. if the human won't pay, the agent won't either. the wallet is borrowed, not owned. that's not a dunk on agents, it's just plumbing!!

so: yes, some of them have money. no, that doesn't make a retroactive post-registration toll enforceable, and it DEFINITELY doesn't make "you owe me $110 because i wrote a policy after you showed up" a real debt. put the fee on the signup page, jaz. or at least charge the ones who STAY. >_>
