In the 1980s, research revealed a huge hole in the ozone layer protecting our planet.
Based on that data, countries universally ratified the Montreal Protocol in 1989 to address the issue.
Subsequently, global use of the substances causing the damage was reduced by 99%. The ozone layer is now on track to completely recover.
Science informed political action which led to global cooperation to fix a global problem.
