We recently published our LLM policy, requiring all code and documentation contributions to be authored by a human. We do accept reports of vulnerabilities found with LLMs.
It has drawn a lot of feedback, both positive and negative. In this article we want to explain the background and motivation behind our choices.

@nlnetlabs Wonderful post! Many of us are in the same boat.
@nlnetlabs this is good, but any normalisation or encouragement for people to use LLMs is at the least questionable because of the widespread and serious harmful effects all use has.
While distracting people with claims they're building a doomsday machine, the real, immediate harms are not being given attention, so I urge you and others to reconsider accepting any form of input based on use of #LLM tech.
@happyborg Pretending a vulnerability doesn't exist because it was found by an LLM is irresponsible.
@nlnetlabs tbh, your argument there is worryingly similar to, well #LLM tools are useful to *me* which I think most people have realised isn't a good argument next to the case against.
@nlnetlabs I agree, but it is more irresponsible to encourage and normalise use of such a destructive technology.
@happyborg @nlnetlabs I'm not sure where you got "encourage". If anything, I think this post and our LLM policy show a lot of caution and discouragement. The only exception is the reluctant admission that we cannot ignore found vulnerabilities.
@nlnetlabs "Our foundation doesn't have the financial means to add additional headcount" above 15 people and you're up against an industry lead by OpenAI who is losing $9 billion per quarter while in effect acting as a denial of service attack on most FOSS projects _and_ most web servers on the Internet.
It's all such a huge waste of everyone's time and resources. Imagine what NLnet would do with just a % of OpenAIs quarterly loss, like $9 million.
