Wow. My wife is Italian and she learned German from the comic books with Donald Duck and Micky Mouse.
Her biggest struggle were the German Umlaute like "ä", "ö", and "ü" and there was a time when she put the 2 dots above every vowel because she couldn't figure out the correct position. 😀
Another German habit is connecting words like in "Donaudampfschifffahrtskaptiänskajüttentürklinke".

@_elena A friend of mine once told me that you speak a perfect German when you correctly pronounce "eichhörnchen" (squirrel).

@_elena someone on here, in the fediverse, posted the word which means the opposite of "schadenfreude;" -can't remember who or what it was; though.

@_elena Here's a weird tip if you're trying to learn German and like words such as Schadenfreude:

The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig.

If you don't know it yet Koenig has created new words for emotions and feelings that didn't yet have a word and he pulls from languages around the world, including German. He explains the etymology but it is also just an absolutely wonderful linguistic work.

I think it can be a nice way to get a first grasp of the layer underneath the words of the German language.

The site is a tumblr, all there is but it gives you an idea of his work (and do an online search if you want the actual book - it's sold in many places).

@_elena The best way to learn a new language for me (in addition to online lessons) has been watching the local Sesame Street and telenovelas. I watch Valeria on Netflix for Spanish (at half speed!) and for German, I think Sturm der Liebe is pretty good… lots of schadenfreude in that one! 😁
