Great googly moogly I hate writing on a phone. It's wild how terrible this experience still is.
@mttaggart It’s kind of amazing Apple’s next phone gimmick is a double screen folding one and not just one with a keyboard. They’d sell so many. People who have said they hate Apple for a decade would buy them.
@r343l They would sell about thirty to Fedi people. The rest need the bottom of the screen to swipe on TikTok and Insta
@mttaggart Well, I mean while we’re doing foldables, you wouldn’t have to sacrifice any screen space! Big screen AND a keyboard is possible!
@r343l The dream of the Sidekick is alive
@mttaggart In a non-doomed society, laptops and phones with physical keyboards would still be everywhere. Instead, we have what used to be known as "phablets" (minus the headphone jacks) everywhere.
The toddler dictates I am almost never allowed to use a computer until she's asleep, but must somehow compose text in stolen moments. It would be the bees knees if that didn't mean constantly fighting with the interface to shape a paragraph of English.
Like fine, the capacitive interface won. Could we, I dunno, apply some of that machine learning to adjusting swipe autocorrect based on rejections? How about resizing keys based on typos? Just some cool free ideas that aren't trying to do a typewriter at 1/20 scale with a single finger.
@mttaggart funny enough is that iOS does some of this behind the scenes. Specifically key resizing. It doesn’t show up on the interface but they make key press areas larger for next likely keys. It’s a big reason why iOS tends to have repeated typos from time to time.
I remember reading a long time ago that they do, or did, actually resize keys based on most likely next letter.
Or more accurately, the hitbox for the keys would change without any visual difference.
I don't know if they don't do that anymore or the method just got worse, or whatever, but yeah, it's pretty miserable now on most software keyboards.
@mttaggart
I've just accepted whenever I post from my phone there is a good chance I will sound inebriated
@mttaggart and amazingly, at least on iOS, autocarrot (at least finger to key detection) has gotten NOTABLY WORSE in the last few years.
@bitprophet I simply CANNOT with the Apple keyboard. I refuse to use it.
This rant brought to you by a sleepy cuddle with one arm trapped, the other numb, and like a 15% hit rate for swipe autocomplete
@mttaggart Try developing on a phone!
@catsalad @mttaggart I already SSH'd to a server from my phone to fix a config file with nano. That's not an experience I would recommend.
@mttaggart This is why my next phone is going to have Qi2 charging, and I'm getting the Clicks Power Keyboard. I despise touchscreen keyboards.
