@julieofthespirits @inquiline Even during partition, a not insignificant number of Polish people ventured into the colonies and took part. Joseph Conrad is a prominent but by far not the only example. (Sorry if this is too much, and it goes beyond the topic of conversation. I have family in Poland and so the story of Polish people in Africa is a bit of an obsession of mine)

His name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski. Came from the Russian occupied part of Poland, his parents came from Polish nobility and were persecuted because of their nationalist activism. He only learned English when he was 20!
