Today @zackwhittaker brings up a very important topic about the launch of the new Apple Watch this week:

How a large company like Apple can play an important role in normalizing intrusive surveillance.

"Apple is opening the door to a world where other companies, device makers, and app developers try to recreate or rival Apple's technology and do a far shoddier job, all the while creating a worse surveillance monster and introducing new security and privacy risks along the way."

We don't talk enough about how privacy is also a culture, part of cultural norms that can go in one direction or another.

Products like this, produced and sold at a massive scale, weakens our culture of consent and privacy, and pushes society towards the increasing normalization of always-on surveillance.

@Em0nM4stodon @zackwhittaker It bears repeating: only a few decades ago surveillance-based regimes would have laughed their evil heads off at our *self-inflicted* future.

And still: besides alexa, apple and google - no one's really listening, are they?
Maybe those brand logos really are irresistible...

@Em0nM4stodon @zackwhittaker yeah that's it ... They don't need to record / store everything you and your friends say (even so they still might do it). Just train AI on what you say and do. Before long they pretty much can predict who you vote for, what products you will buy, what you will likely do, and what all your other preferences are. This can then be used to manipulate you to take action or not depending on the junk they bombard you with. Even with regulation and stiff penalties for companies, including for accidental or deliberate storage or releases of your data to others, this will soon become a network of spies (including clueless 'friends') and surveillance devices recording everything we do, listen to, or watch .. before long you can't trust anyone anymore #BraveNewWorld #NoMassSurveillance

@Em0nM4stodon @zackwhittaker They have always been surveilling, listening, data mining, etc … it’s really amazing that they found a way to not only do it but also get you to pay for it.

@Em0nM4stodon @zackwhittaker while i absolutely agree with you, i think perhaps it's time we consider the elephant in the room - that people in general don't want or care at all about privacy. we don't say it out loud, but it seems to me that society lost the battle and we've accepted our role as products for corporations.

@pizzadoesntexist People do care a lot when their privacy is affected, or when they experience direct negative consequences because their data was exposed or shared without their consent or knowledge.

The problems we have at a cultural level that leads to the privacy nightmare we live in is that:

Most people don't understand well to which extend their data is collected, stored, and shared without their knowledge.
Most people don't have a deep understanding of the negative impacts data exposure can have on themselves and on others.
Our society in general has a poor implementation of consent practices.
There is a lacks of educational resources to develop empathy to a degree where everyone would understand well the impact their actions can have on others.

@Em0nM4stodon i must say that's not been my experience. take the LG situation. of the 10 or so people i've shared with - none of them was phazed by it. reactions varied between jokes or a vague shrug. they couldn't care less even when i told them that their private conversations in their living rooms are being recorded (which is misleading but i did it on purpose to test reactions). and that's been my experience time and time again, for years now.

@Em0nM4stodon @zackwhittaker We urgently need a suitable dysphemism for this product category, to duly shame the buyer and wearer. For the camouflaged always-on worn cameras, we have #pervertGlasses and #pervertPods (depending on form). What's a similarly accurate yet suitably pejorative term for always-on worn voice recorders?

wrist taps? eavesdrop watches? body bugs? wrist wires? snoop watches? stalk watches?

But yeah, pretty enraging stuff after the revelations about the LG TVs.
