I spoze if I thought the Harry Potter books were any good, I'd prolly have to experience conflicting urges.
Fortunately, they were not very good, so I'm perfectly comfortable boycotting anything to do with them.
I *do* wish more grownups would have learned to read beyond the 5th grade level. Or, if they were not able to, I wish they'd read at least the Newbery award winners. Such an exposure might have given them a love for art, instead of pap.
You know who's *astonishing*, and as far as I know never won a Newbery -- feel free to check me on that, I'm working from memory -- Judy Blume.
@GeePawHill Good literature, no. But good kid’s books is a different question. Some of my grandkids became interested in reading because of them. And they helped some who felt out of the ordinary to feel more comfortable in their own skin. And that’s why I am so very pissed at JK for attacking such kids.
@gdinwiddie And that's just it, for me. "good literature" and "good kid's books" are the same.

Hard agree on all points.
I spent a few years convinced I'd _missed_ something in Harry Potter but then I look back and people were absolutely _nuts_ for 50 Shades of Grey and John Grisham's, etc.
I have sampled all of the above and found them wanting.
I continually find _popular_ and _good_ have a wildly small overlap when represented as a Venn diagram.

@GeePawHill I am of the Harry Potter generation and I used to cop so much shit from my peers because I read the first Harry Potter book and thought it was absolute garbage so I didn't bother reading any of the others.
I was even bullied until the Lord of the Rings movies came out because that was my fantasy series of choice. Lol.

The Newbery's have fucking _Sounder_. They have Susan Cooper, they have the mixed up files of mrs basil e frankwiler, they have _A Wrinkle In Time_, _The Witch of Blackbird Pond_. OMG, Lloyd Alexander.
